Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a probe after a group of police officers along with their subordinates allegedly thrashed Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and his associates.
The alleged assault on Additional Deputy Commissioner GM Dar when the police refused to provide them rescue boats meant for flood affected people near Nehru Park in Srinagar during the wee hours on Friday.
Dar along with other district officials staged a protest in Press Enclave and amid anti-police slogans demanded action against the ‘erring’ police.
Dar said he and his colleagues were thrashed by ‘unbridled’ police officers for carrying out the directions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to provide assistance to flood victims. “I along with Tehsildar Srinagar Shafiq Wafayi reached Nehru Park at 6 in the morning to provide boats to flood affected people. SDPO Nehru Park Vinod Kumar, SHO Ram Munshi Bagh Sabzar Ahmed, DO Nehru Park Reyaz Ahmed along with their subordinates approached us and demanded boats from us. When I refused to provide them boats meant for flood affected people, they pounced on me and all the officers not only abused me but hit me with gun butts and canes," he said.
"They kicked me and when Tehsildar Srinagar tried to save me, they beat him as well,” Dar said while displaying his fractured hand.
He said it was an attempt to murder as they (police officers and their men) tried to throw him into the Dal Lake.
The protestors accompanying Dar threatened to go for an indefinite strike in case the ‘erring’ policemen are not punished. “We did what the Chief Minister directed us to do. We are district administrative officers. What about common people when we are not safe here,” the protesting administrative officers said.
“We have brought the matter into the notice of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and we will not budge till those ‘guilty’ police officers are not taken to task. What we witnessed today was beyond our imagination and we can’t forget the scene when these police officers kicked, slapped and dragged our officers in our presence,” they said.
SDPO Nehru Park, Vinod Kumar termed the allegations baseless and said no police officer thrashed any district administration official.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Rohit Kansal assured the victim officials that stern action will be initiated against the policemen responsible for the assault.
SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar said have ordered an immediate inquiry into the allegations leveled by top administrative officials.
Meanwhile, the District Officials of Srinagar along with scores of employees staged a protest outside Divisional Commissioners office demanding immediate action against the ‘erring’ police officers.
