Ganderbal: National Conference party convention in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday witnessed chaos and confusion as the two groups of the party raised slogans against each other, while in the midst of the uproar Provincial President of the party for Kashmir province Nasir Aslam Wani lost his cool and kicked a party worker.
Eyewitnesses said that National Conference had organized a party convention in Beehama Ganderbal at their district office. As the convention started, scores of supporters of Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar stood up and raised slogans against the party. These workers alleged that the party is in no mood to award mandate to Sheikh Ishfaq as ‘promised’ to him by the party leadership. They were countered by other group of the party who raised slogans against Sheikh Ishfaq and urged upon the leaders present there to convince Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to contest from Ganderbal himself. These supporters said that National Conference will ‘taste defeat’ in case the mandate is given to Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar.
Reports said that both the groups tried to clash with each other, however the timely intervention of some party leaders defused the situation.
“As the Rural Development Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar finished his speech, both the groups started shouting slogans against each other. Nasir Aslam Wani lost his cool and came down from the stage and kicked a party worker continuously. The action of Wani was resented by other workers who warned of election boycott if the party leaders don’t change their attitude towards their workers,” an eyewitness who was part of the convention said.
Reports said security personnel stopped another worker who tried to confront Nasir Aslam Wani. Scores of other party workers left the convention amid anti-NC slogans soon after this incident.
“The National Conference leaders have learnt nothing from the defeat that they tasted in Parliament elections. The behaviour of these leaders is disgusting. We have our own self-respect and if the party leaders did not change their attitude towards their workers, then we will boycott the forthcoming Assembly elections,” a party worker said.
Pertinently, in April this year, Minister for Higher Education Muhammad Akbar Lone in presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah humiliated a youth when he tried to draw the attention of Chief Minister towards his problem during an election rally in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
