Srinagar: The ‘ Supreme Court’ of Islamic Shariat headed by Mufti Bashir-ud-Din Thursday issued a decree seeking expulsion of Christian priests from Jammu and Kashmir and monitoring of the activities of Christian missionary schools in the Valley.
Addressing a press conference here, Deputy Grand Mufti, Nasir-ul-Islam said, “The decree isn’t against the Christians living in Kashmir in any manner. However, pastors CM Khanna, Jim Borst, Gayoor Messah, Chandarkanta and Chandra were attracting local Muslim youth to conversion through money allurement. The Sharia court has unimpeachable evidence against these three priests who are non-locals. They have been using financial allurement to convert some local youth to Christianity.
He said that this was very sensitive and hot issue that was investigated with full responsibility. He thanked to all religious organisations for their cooperation during the course of investigation. The representatives present during press briefing were from Jamaat-i-Islamia, Jammiat-ahli-Hadees, J&K Muslim Personal Law Board, Majlish Ithaad-i-Millat, Mirwaiz Molvi Umer Farooq, Darul Aloom Rahimia, Jamat-i-Islami, Islamic Study Circle and J&K Muslim Personal Law Board.
Quoting Grand Mufti, he said, “The Sharia court has issued a decree for their expulsion from the state and the administration must ensure that they do not enter the state. The decree has been issued to preserve harmony between followers of different faiths in the Valley,” Nasir added.
The court has also asked the state government to keep a check on the activities of local missionary schools. “These schools should include a period for Islamic education in their daily teaching programmes and a prayer written by poet Iqbal should be part of the school assembly prayers at these schools,” the Dy Grand Mufti said.
