Srinagar, Nov 20: Arrest of several youth by police on Sunday triggered protests with people taking to streets demanding their release.
The protests was followed by clashes between youth and forces in city even as shops and business establishments remained shut in uptown Maisuma.
Protests erupted at uptown Maisuma against the arrest of a local youth Ishfaq Hussain. Witnesses said that youth came out in area demanding release of the detained person. They said that Police and CRPF who were deployed in strength swung into action and tried to disperse the protestors. However, youth resorted to stone pelting that continued till afternoon.
Pertinently, Ishaq Hussain was arrested by Police on Friday while protesting against anti-Islamic content pouring in social media Facebook.
Similarly, in parts of the old city, groups of youth protested against the arrest spree. A group of youth raising slogans appeared in Saraf Kadal area and started protesting against the arrest. Police and CRPF immediately sealed the area to disperse them. However, they offered stiff resistance by throwing stones against them. The pitched battle continued and spread to other parts of the old city including Rajouri Kadal, Kawdara and Gojwara. In retaliation to stone pelting, the forces fired tear gas canisters and cane charged protesters to disperse them.
