JAMMU — Four soldiers were injured after a gunfight erupted between militants and security forces in Chenab Valley of Kishtwar district where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address an election rally on Saturday.

According to the reports from the news agency KNO, four soldiers received bullet injuries and were evacuated to a medical facility after an encounter broke out at Chhatroo area of Kishtwar.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address an election rally in neighbouring Doda tomorrow.

“Based on the intelligence inputs, a joint operation with J&K Police was launched in Chatroo area at Kishtwar. A contact has been established with the terrorists at 3.30 pm. In the ensuing firefight, four army personnel were injured. The operation is in progress,” the Army's White Knight Corps said in a statement.

Moreover, Additional Director General of Police, Jammu, Anand Jain said, “Exchange of fire has taken place between search teams of security forces and hiding terrorists at Pingnal Dugadda forest area, upper reaches of Naidgham village under the jurisdiction of Chhatroo Police Station, Kishtwar district."

According to sources, the encounter began when the Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the army, launched an anti-militancy operation based on specific intelligence inputs. Militants, who were hiding in the area, opened fire on the search party, prompting retaliation from security forces.

Reports suggest that at least four Jaish-e-Muhammad militants are trapped in Chatroo area of Kishtwar where the encounter is currently going on and search operations have been intensified to nearby areas of the encounter area. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the army, surrounded the area to neutralise the militants.

ANANTNAG — Eight members of a family, including five children, died on the spot in a fatal car accident in Daksum area of Larnoo tehsil in Anantnag district on Saturday.

The family, residents of Kishtwar, was travelling in a Maruti Swift car bearing the registration number JK03H9017.

According to the news agency KNT, the accident occurred while the family was en route from Kishtwar via Sinthan Top towards Marwah. The accident happened after their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge near Aarshun Hut.

The deceased family members have been identified as Imtiyaz Rather, aged 45 years, son of Ghulam Rasool Rather from Kishtwar; Afroza Begum, aged 40 years, wife of Imtiyaz Ahmad Rather from Kishtwar; Reshma, aged 40 years, wife of Majid Ahmad; Areeba Imtiyaz, aged 12 years, daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad; Aniya Jan, aged 10 years, daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad; Abaan Imtiyaz, aged 6 years, daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad; Musaib Majid, aged 16 years, son of Majid Ahmad; and Mushail Majid, aged 8 years, son of Majid Ahmad.

Meanwhile, the local authorities including the police teams have been rushed to the spot who are investigating the cause of the accident.

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for a severe heatwave over the next four days, with temperatures hitting record highs and impacting both daily life and the region's delicate ecosystems.

Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded its second-highest July temperature in a decade at 35.6°C, matching Jammu City’s temperature. Qazigund registered its third all-time highest temperature at 34.2°C.

Other parts of Kashmir, including Pahalgam and Kupwara, also experienced significant temperature increases, with the mercury rising to 29.3°C and 35.0°C, respectively. This heatwave is expected to continue, with weather models forecasting dry conditions and potential record-breaking temperatures.

The ongoing heatwave has exacerbated water scarcity issues, leading to public protests in Baramulla district. Residents, particularly within Pattan jurisdiction, have voiced their concerns over severe water shortages, prompting police to urge people not to block highways.

A recent violent demonstration at Chainabal saw the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway blocked in protest. In response, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Pattan, Dr Gulzar Ahmed, assured residents that their grievances would be addressed promptly, with water tankers deployed on a roaster basis to mitigate the crisis.

The rising temperatures are also threatening Kashmir’s aquatic life. Experts warn that the heat wave is disrupting the region’s aquatic ecosystems, leading to potential mass fish mortality.

Fish are highly sensitive to changes in water temperature, and the heatwave is causing water levels to drop and oxygen levels to decrease. This hostile environment has already led to incidents of mass fish deaths, with the most recent occurring in the Tsoont Koel stream near Barbar Shah, Srinagar.

Research highlights the deteriorating water quality in lakes such as Dal Lake, where dissolved oxygen levels have fallen drastically due to untreated sewage, agricultural runoff, and industrial waste. The increased biological oxygen demand from pollution, combined with rising temperatures, creates a deadly combination for aquatic life.

Dr. Mehraj Bashir, an ichthyologist, noted that while some fish species can tolerate higher temperatures and pollution levels, the native Schizothorax species is particularly vulnerable and has seen declining numbers.

Meanwhile, despite the severe heatwave, the Education Department in Doda and Kishtwar districts has yet to change school timings, unlike in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Education Officer (CEO) Doda, Prakash Lal Thapa, stated that no representations from parents or heads of institutions have been received to prompt a change in school hours, leaving students to endure the harsh conditions.

As the heatwave continues to grip the region, authorities and experts alike are calling for vigilance and immediate measures to mitigate its impact on both human and aquatic life. Relief is expected after July 28, with a forecasted decline in temperatures.

KISHTWAR — A couple among four family members died after a vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Bandarkoot area of Kishtwar district on Thursday, officials said.

Station House Officer (SHO) Kishtwar told the news agency KNO that the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Bandarkoot.

He said four people died in the incident, while another one was injured. The deceased have been identified as Yasir Ahmed Bhat, son of Abdul Gani Bhat, his wife Shazada Begum, their children Artash Yasir and Ailaf Yasir, while the injured person identified is Aarish Yasir, all residents of Berwar Kishtwar.

Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Devansh Yadav said five family members were travelling in a swift car which fell into a deep gorge.

"Tragically, four members of a family lost lives in the accident, while another is injured," he said. He said the injured was out of danger and all possible help from the Red Cross will be given.

KISHTWAR — Two persons died while 10 others sustained injuries in a road accident that took place on Friday evening in Kishtwar district, officials said.

The accident took place when a passenger vehicle (Tata Sumo) they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Hakko Palali Paddar area of Kishtwar district, as per an official who spoke to the news agency KNO.

“The passenger vehicle bearing registration number JK17-7378 was on its way from Gulabgarh to Hakko Palali Paddar when the driver lost his control over the vehicle and fell into a deep gorge, resulting in the death of two persons and injuries to 10 passengers including the driver,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the bodies were retrieved and all injured persons were evacuated to Public Health Centre (PHC) Atholi Paddar for treatment.

SRINAGAR — One of the people injured in a road accident in Warwan, Kishtwar district, on Wednesday has tragically passed away, bringing the total toll to three.

An official said that the incident involved a snow-cutter machine, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries.

The official said that Khursheed Ahmad Raina, son of Gulam Mohammad Raina from Brayan area, succumbed to injuries at the Primary Health Centre Mwda.

"Following legal procedures, the body has been handed over to the family for final rites," he said.

KISHTWAR — A fatal accident occurred in Kishtwar district as a snow cutter machine, involved in road clearance operations, met with tragedy in Warwan. According to an official statement, at least two individuals lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries in the unfortunate incident.

An official, quoted by a local news agency, said that the snow cutter machine, employed for clearing roads in Warwan, veered off the path and fell into a deep gorge.

The immediate consequence of the accident saw two fatalities, with the victims succumbing on the spot. The injured parties have been rushed to the hospital for treatment, as confirmed by the official source.

In response to the tragic incident, the government has declared ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 each for the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, a sum of one lakh rupees has been announced for those injured in the mishap, as part of the relief measures.

KISHTWAR — Abdul Qayoom (JKPS) officially took on the role of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Kishtwar on Wednesday, receiving a warm welcome from Senior Police officers at the District Police Headquarters. A guard of honour was presented in his honour during the reception.

In a brief yet impactful function, outgoing SSP Khalil Poswal (JKPS) handed over the baton to the new SSP Kishtwar, Abdul Qayoom.

After assuming the charge, Abdul Qayoom conducted an introductory meeting with Police officers of the Police District, highlighting the significance of dedication and enthusiasm in addressing the challenges faced by the people of Kishtwar.

KISHTWAR — In a significant development, law enforcement officials successfully apprehended an accused individual who had been evading authorities for the past 24 years in Kishtwar district, revealed a senior police official.

The police officer, in communication with a local news agency, disclosed that Jamal Din, identified as the son of Mohammad Ramzan and a resident of Dhalain Sinoo in Gandoh, was apprehended by a dedicated police team.

"The apprehended individual, Jamal Din, is wanted in connection with FIR number 12/1999, categorized under section 364 of the RPC (now IPC)," stated the police official.

Following the apprehension, the accused was promptly presented before a competent court to initiate necessary legal proceedings, as detailed by the officer overseeing the operation.

POONCH — A tense situation unfolded as five soldiers lost their lives and two sustained injuries during an ongoing encounter in Surankote, Poonch, officials confirmed today. The clash occurred during an anti-militancy operation in the Dera Ki Gali area on Thursday, with the soldiers coming under attack, as per initial reports from army officials.

The deceased soldiers were identified as Birendra Singh, Karan Kumar, Chandan Kumar, and Gautam Kumar. Meanwhile, Sundeep Kumar, Shyam Sundar Das, and Todmal Dnyaneshwar Bhaskarrav are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, revealed top officials.

The entire region remains under a cordon as security forces continue a meticulous search operation in the area. "The encounter site is cordoned off, and efforts are ongoing to neutralize the terrorists," officials stated.

Simultaneously, in an adjacent district of Kishtwar, security forces are intensively searching multiple residences. A senior police officer mentioned that this operation is being conducted in conjunction with the ongoing encounter in Surankote, Poonch. The officer emphasized that numerous houses are being thoroughly searched as part of these efforts.

The confluence of these two operations, one marred by casualties and injuries and the other involving meticulous house-to-house searches, signifies a heightened state of tension in the region. Authorities remain vigilant as they endeavour to maintain security and quell any potential threats amidst these operations.

The situation remains fluid as security forces aim to stabilize the area and ensure the safety of civilians while dealing with these parallel operations across Poonch and Kishtwar districts.

SRINAGAR — The region of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir experienced a flurry of seismic activity on Monday afternoon, with a succession of earthquakes hitting various areas, causing widespread concern and multiple aftershocks across the region.

The first earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, originated in Kargil, Ladakh, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Recorded at 3:48 pm, this tremor sent shockwaves throughout the area, prompting immediate alerts. The epicenter's coordinates were registered at 76.74°E, 33.15°N, according to data from Kashmir Weather, sourced via GFZ.

Shortly after, another seismic event of magnitude 5.1 jolted Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, at 4:01 pm, with its epicenter at 76.7188°E, 33.1832°N and a depth of 16 kilometres. The impact of this quake was felt across the region.

Subsequently, at the same time, a third earthquake of 3.8 magnitude rocked Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with coordinates at 33.34°N, 76.78°E. The depth was recorded at 10 kilometres, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

Following these tremors, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Kishtwar again at 4:18 pm, centered at 33.37°N, 76.57°E, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to NCS data.

Continuing the series of seismic activity, a fifth earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale affected Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at 4:44 pm. The coordinates for this event were noted at 33.36°N, 76.72°E, with a depth of 10 kilometres.

These successive earthquakes have raised concerns about the safety and stability of the region. As aftershocks continue, the toll of earthquakes has now reached five, prompting heightened vigilance across the affected areas.

JAMMU — Kishtwar Saffron, which is cultivated and harvested in the higher reaches, has been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry.

As per the news agency KNO, the news was shared by Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Dr Devansh Yadav on social media platform X with a picture of the certificate.

“Kishtwar Saffron brand gets GI tagged for the first time… Tagged along with Kashmiri saffron - multiple FPO brands coming up now!! Icing on the cake - certified as grade 1,” the post reads.

The spice is grown in some parts of Kishtwar region of Jammu along with parts of Kashmir.

The legendary most expensive harvest of saffron, popularly known as Kumkum, is also a key cash crop in Jammu's isolated mountainous district of Kishtwar.

Saffron cultivation is a cultural heritage that represents freshness and purity. Kishtwar's saffron production area is called locally as Mandal.

KISHTWAR — One person died while another was injured in a road mishap in Kishtwar district on Thursday morning.

An official said that an accident took place at Sinthan Top when an Alto car skidded off the road this morning, resulting in the death of a person while another was injured.

The officer identified the deceased as Latif Ahmad Malik son of Abdul Rashid Malik, resident of Thamankoot Kapran, Anantnag.

The injured was identified as Mohd Amir Wani son of Mohd Ilyas Wani, resident of Brienty Batpora, Anantnag.

The officer further added that a case in this regard has been registered by the concerned police station.

KISHTWAR — In a tragic incident, three visually impaired brothers were killed in the mountainous Kishtwar district last night when their house collapsed.

An official, as per the reports from the news agency KNO, said that a residential house collapsed in Puller hamlet of Nagseni tehsil last night due to continuous rainfall in the area for the past two days.

“Three of the inmates died on the spot while two others were rescued,” he said, adding that the deceased were visually impaired.

The officer said that the mother and sister of the deceased were rescued by locals.

The deceased siblings have been identified as Sajan Kumar (28), Rajesh Kumar (30) and Ravinder Kumar (32) from Puller Kishtwar.

JAMMU — Six persons died and three were injured in an accident at a dam of Pakal Dul hydroelectric project in the mountainous Kishtwar district on Wednesday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kishtwar, Khalil Poswal told the news agency KNO that six persons died and three were injured in an accident at the site of Dangduru dam project in Kishtwar district.

Reports reaching here said that a cruiser vehicle ferrying project workers fell into a deep gorge near the site of the dam project.

KISHTWAR — National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against 13 Kishtwar-based militants operating from across the border.

“Upon request of Kishtwar Police, NIA Special Court, Jammu, issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against 13 (militants) who hail from district Kishtwar but they are settled and operating from PAK,” reads a statement as per the news agency GNS.

The names of militants, as per the statement, include Shahnawaz Kanth alias Munna alias Umer son of Abdul Rasheed, resident of Hullar Kishtwar; Nayeem Ahmed alias Amir/Gazi son of Gh. Nabi Gundna, resident of Near Jamia Masjid Kishtwar; Mohd Iqbal alias Bilal son of Mohd Akber Butt, resident of Near Kichloo Market Kishtwar; Shahnawaz alias Nayeem son of Gh. Mohd, resident of Chirool Padyarna; Javid Hussain Giri alias Muzamil son of Mohd Amin Giri, resident of Kundali Pochal.

Bashir Ahmed Mughal son of Gh. Qadir Mughal, resident of Jugna Keshwan; Gazi-ul-Din son of Mohd Ayoub Guijer, resident of Jugna Keshwan; Sattar Din alias Rajab alias Saifullah son of Mehar Din Gujjar, resident of Jugna Keshwan; Imtiyaz Ahmed alias Dawood son of Aziz Mohd Sheikh, resident of Banderna Kishtwar; Shabir Ahmed son of Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din, resident of Kither Bonjwah also figure in the list.

Besides, the other names in the list include Mohd Rafig Keen son of Bashir Ahmed Keen, resident of Patnazi Bonjwah; Muzaffer Ahmed son of Abdul Ahmed Dev, resident of Semna Colony Zewar Kishtwar and Azad Hussain son of Abdul Majeed, resident of Affani Padder, presently residing in PAK.

“The warrants have been issued in NIA case FIR 272/2022 (J&K Terror-related case), which stands charged with offenses in case FIR No. 272/2022 under Section 120-B/121-A/IPC, 13/18/39/UAPA of P/S Kishtwar. SSP Kishtwar Khalil Poswal said that the Chief Investigation Officer (CIO) of Kishtwar Police approached the Special NIA Court for issuing non-bailable warrants against the above accused for their active involvement in terror activities for creating unrest in the Chenab valley and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement reads.

“They mobilized sleeper cells and pushed them into J&K in connivance with secessionist and separatist leaders for waging war against the Government of India with the nefarious design of seceding Jammu and Kashmir from Union of India,” the statement said, adding that further investigation in the case is underway.

GANDERBAL — The bodies of two labourers, who got buried under the debris after an avalanche hit the Sarbal area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Thursday morning, were recovered. Both were found dead.

An official, while speaking to the news agency KNO, said that Sandeep Singh, son of Munshi Ram and Bala Krishna, son of Bansi Lal, both residents of Kishtwar were killed in an avalanche. They were working at the Megha tunnel project, he said.

The bodies were sent to the mortuary PHC Sonamarg for medico-legal formalities.

Earlier, soon after the avalanche, the Police, Army, SDRF, Beacon and the Megha tunnel project team launched a rescue operation. "The area was closed for the time being as a precautionary measure and the residents were advised to stay indoors and not to venture out unnecessarily," the official said.

Meanwhile, in an effort to ensure the safety of workers in the Baltal area, Additional District Development Commissioner Ganderbal Mushtaq Ahmad said that all workers have been shifted to safer places.

According to Ahmad, 1275 workers employed by the company have been relocated so far. The ADDC provided an update on the retrieval of two missing workers. He said the bodies of the missing workers were located through the use of one worker's mobile phone.

“We were tracking both the workers since we received the missing report, and around the evening, we were successful in tracking one of the workers through his mobile phone. Soon after some time, we retrieved another body, and hence both the missing dead bodies were retrieved,” he said.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Mushtaq emphasized that all rescued individuals are safe and the situation is being closely monitored. "The cause of the workers' disappearance is currently under investigation," he added.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures for workers in potentially hazardous areas. The district administration has assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to ensure the well-being of workers in the area.

Police Statement

Meanwhile, a police spokesperson in a statement said, “The snow avalanche triggered today from the upper reaches of the Ranga Morh and accumulated at Sarbal area of Sonamarg. Initially, no report of loss of life and property was there. However, later on, when the snow settled, the management of Megha tunnel company reported that two labourers of their company have reportedly gone missing and got buried under the snow.”

Sonamarg Police, ART teams of the Army and SDRF teams reached the spot and started a search and rescue operation, he said, adding, “The site was still vulnerable as small snow slides were still coming from the top of the hill. After strenuous efforts, one dead body was recovered from the snow. The deceased is identified as Sandeep Kumar son of Munshi Ram, resident of Sara Padar Kishtwar.”

After some time, another missing person’s body was recovered from the site and the deceased has been identified as Bala Krishna son of Bansi Lal, resident of Gara Padar Kishtwar, the spokesperson said, adding that both missing bodies have been recovered by the rescue and search teams and the rescue and search operation has been stopped.

He further said that Megha company management has been asked to shift the workers to a safe location till the weather gets cleared.

“Helpline by District Police Ganderbal has already been issued in view of inclement weather. Till the weather improves, the general public has been advised not to venture out in vulnerable areas,” the police spokesperson said.

Lieutenant Governor expresses anguish

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, expressed anguish over the avalanche incident.

Taking to Twitter, the LG wrote, “I am deeply anguished to learn of the unfortunate incident of snow avalanche at Sonamarg in which a precious life has been lost. Army, Police and SDRF teams are engaged in search & rescue operations. (I) directed district administration to provide all necessary assistance to the affected persons.”

JAMMU — Military Intelligence (MI) and Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested a local cleric by busting a “terror-cum- espionage module” run by Pakistan's spy agency Inter Service Intelligence (ISI).

Officials told the news agency KNO that based on specific inputs from Military Intelligence, Kishtwar Police apprehended a local cleric from a mosque in Kishtwar.

“The arrested cleric has been identified as 22-year-old Abdul Wahid, resident of Cherji Dool tehsil in Kishtwar district,” the officials said, adding that “the suspect was working as a Molvi in Madeenatul Uloom Darasgah Dadpeth.”

He was staying with his wife, Fatima and seven-year-old son, Afaan, in a nearby Madrassa, where he was working as Qari (teacher). “That is why he was often referred to as Qari Sahab by many in Kishtwar. Investigations revealed that cleric was working for a terror organisation, Kashmir Janbaaz Force (KJF), being controlled from Pakistan,” the officials said.

“During questioning, intelligence agencies found that Wahid used to pass information related to security forces to ISI and KJF,” the statement said.

Sources said that as a part of ongoing counterintelligence monitoring by Military Intelligence (MI), it came to light that the cleric was passing information pertaining to military deployment and movement to one of his contacts in Pakistan.

“For quite some time, Wahid was under the scanner for his suspicious activities. During the course of the investigation, intelligence agencies found that Wahid was using WhatsApp and other social media accounts to share sensitive info like photographs and video clips of security installation to ISI officials and members of one of the terror organisations in Pakistan,” they said.

The source said that following inputs from MI, sleuths of J&K Police called Wahid to appear for questioning at Kishtwar. “During joint interrogation, Wahid revealed that two years back, through Facebook, he came in contact with one Tayyab Farooqi alias Umar Khatab, who introduced himself as Amir (commander) of Kashmir Janbaz Force (KJF),” the source said.

It added, “He was initially tasked to upload photos and content related to KJF on Facebook. Further, they graduated to WhatsApp, wherein the so-called commander of KJF used to communicate using a Pakistani number.”

The sources said that within weeks, Abdul Wahid became an active member of Facebook and WhatsApp groups run by KJF. “He started supporting their anti-India activities on the digital domain,” they said, adding that Abdul Wahid had even offered to join KJF as a terrorist.”

The sources said that subsequently Wahid also started communicating with a few other unknown cadres, supporters of KJF and officials of Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). “To lure him, ISI men offered him money, a new phone and other gadgetry,” they said.

They added, “Besides this, Abdul Wahid was provided with a few virtual number-based WhatsApp accounts to communicate with his handlers.”

They said that he was instructed to keep his mobile phone clean and change his device frequently.

“Molvi was tasked to radicalise and recruit youth to wage war against India. Besides espionage, ISI asked Qari Saheb to motivate and brainwash youth and prepare them to join KJF,” the sources said, adding that “for the last two years, ISI has been making concerted efforts to revive terror-related activities in Chenab belt, which includes Doda, Kishtwar and Bhaderwah.”

He used to indoctrinate and brainwash youngsters studying in Madrassas to prepare them to pick up Pakistan-sponsored guns against India.

The official sources said that Abdul Wahid, during questioning, accepted to have sent photos of Army camps along with a marked route for infiltration into the same to ISI.

“He disclosed that he had sent locations of nearby Army camp and training locations of Army personnel, hence making these locations and personnel vulnerable to targeted terror attacks,” they said.

“On finding his active involvement with the terrorists and Pakistan's spy agency, the accused is being booked by Kishtwar Police under relevant sections of UAP(A)/CrPC,” they further added.

TRAL — Joint Forces busted a militant hide-out in Midora Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Official sources said that during a routine search operation in the orchards, Joint Forces unearthed a militant hideout.

They said that some rusty utensils and cooking items, besides shoes and socks were recovered from the hideout.

Police in this regard have registered a case under relevant sections of law.

In a statement to GNS, the police said that Kishtwar Police on specific information launched a CASO along with 11RR in general area of Tillar Forest of Marwah in which a hideout was busted and recovered a huge catch of Arms and ammunition.

The police spokesman giving details of recovery as one Pistol, 8 Pistol rounds, one Chinese Grenade, 3 UBGL Grenade, 3 RPG rounds, 3 Explosive Sticks, 1 IED remote and one Pressure Cooker.

Accordingly FIR was registered at Police Marwah under relevant sections of law and investigation taken up, reads the statement.
