SRINAGAR — Amid growing resentment over the delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, National Conference Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq said on Monday that all major political parties — including the BJP, PDP, and PC — are united in their demand for its immediate restoration.
The statement came two days after NC president Farooq Abdullah warned that the party may approach the Supreme Court if the Centre continues to stall the process.
The NC Chief Spokesperson Sadiq emphasized that despite political rivalries, there is "absolute unanimity" on this core issue, calling statehood the people’s “legitimate right.”
“I say this with utmost responsibility while the opposition and we may often be at odds, take jabs at one another, and remain politically competitive, I firmly believe that when it comes to the question of statehood, there is absolute unanimity. Whether it’s BJP, PDP, PC, or any other party, all agree that statehood is our legitimate right and must be restored without any further delay,” Sadiq said in a post on X.
“So the real question is who is creating this atmosphere of confusion? The answer is clear: it is those who benefit from the dual power structure, those who thrive in the shadows of uncertainty and chaos. These are the very elements who deliberately float such misleading narratives not just to undermine the sentiments of the people, but also to cast aspersions on the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and the sanctity of Parliament itself where it was promised,” he added.
“One needs to understand they are doing this solely to create confusion. But remember, if they are not faithful to the leadership of this country and the promises made, how can they ever be the well-wishers of Jammu and Kashmir?” Sadiq asked.
A day earlier, NC leader Tanvir Sadiq, responding to reports suggesting that the Centre may agree to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood only after fresh elections under a revamped framework, said there is already a clear precedent for restoring statehood without such conditions.
“Himachal Pradesh was granted statehood while its Assembly was in vogue. The UT had a functional legislature since 1963, and statehood was conferred on 25 January 1971 without dissolving the Assembly, following the passage of the State of Himachal Pradesh Act by Parliament on 18 December 1970,” Sadiq said.
