Srinagar, March 29: The University of Kashmir has constituted ‘expert committees’ to look into the issue of ‘wrong questions’ in entrance test papers of various postgraduate programmes.
The KU’s Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof AM Shah said that the ‘expert committees are looking into the issue.’ “After the committees examine the whole thing, we will consider future course of action. In fact I have asked experts to point out exactly what is wrong. We are going by the norms,” he said.
Official sources said the University authorities have received a number of complaints that the entrance test question papers carried ‘wrong as well as out of syllabus questions,’ prompting aspirants to react and seek corrective measures.
A source said the University, in a damage control exercise, has now cancelled or deleted wrong questions and is contemplating to go for evaluation minus them. “In some cases, the question papers have been found to be very tough, above the standard where you can't evaluate a graduate student,” they said. “With some questions, all the options (four) of answers have been found to be correct while with many no correct answer has been found,” they said.
In more than a dozen PG programmes, many questions have been now either been “cancelled or deleted” after being found outside the syllabus or above standard.
The answer keys, put on the KU website lately, reveal that more than eight questions have been cancelled in M.Sc Zoology, 18 in Statistics, 10 in Arabic, 10 in Islamic Studies, 16 in Bio Technology, 7 in Economics and on an average five in M Com, Botany and Chemistry. The varsity has also deleted five questions in master’s programme in Education.
A high-level meeting of officers, sources said, was held in the varsity on Thursday to sort out the matter. “The entrance examination happens to be all about sanctity and careful approach. But here the University authorities seem to have grossly erred with the question papers,” said a group of PG aspirants. “The University cannot arbitrarily cancel the questions just to save its skin. The entire issue must be thoroughly probed as it concerns the career of 40000 candidates who appeared in this year’s entrance test.”
Meanwhile, the University’s PG entrance examinations concluded here on Thursday, except for the Social Work programme whose examination is being conducted afresh.
A KU spokesman said the examination held in 26 different sessions for 10 days concluded on Thursday.
The KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad and Dean, Academic Affairs, today inspected different examination centers.
While expressing satisfaction over the ‘fair conduct of examinations’, Prof Talat said: “I interacted with aspirants at various centers within the campus and they are satisfied with the facilities and arrangements made by the University for fair conduct of examinations.”
Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof AM Shah, under whose supervision the whole exercise of entrance examination was carried out, was “delighted” that the system put in place worked well and the process was concluded successfully. “The results have been declared within the shortest possible time,” he said. “The entire process from receiving of forms to conducting examinations and declaration of results has taken us a month only. This will help us start the new academic session from first week of April, 2013 as per schedule.”
