Srinagar: Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was arrested in order to prevent him from visiting Shopian in South Kashmir where a youth had died under mysterious circumstances recently, a spokesman of the amalgam said here on Friday.
He said the octogenarian leader and some of his associates were arrested outside Geelani's residence in uptown Hyderpora this afternoon.
They were detained at Humhama Police Station, he said.
The Hurriyat leader had announced to lead a public protest in Shopian today against the alleged killing of a local youth, Aaqib Ahmad by government forces on Tuesday.
In a statement Geelani had said that he would visit Shopian to express solidarity with the Aqib's family.
