Pulwama: Hundreds of students from Women’s Degree College Pulwama Monday protested against the J&K Government’s “failure to provide basic facilities to the institution.”
The students raised slogans against the state government and district administration and marched through the main market here, seeking fulfillment of their demands. They also marched through some of the roads in Pulwama and later presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner who assured them that he would visit the college on Tuesday.
“There are only three rooms for more than five hundred students studying in the college. The paucity of space is causing us immense hardship,” said a group of protesters.
They said the classrooms happen to be jam-packed throughout the day. “We are unable to study in this scorching heat. The government has miserably failed to provide basic facilities to the college. This college looks more of a cowshed than an educational institute,” they said.
The protesters said the state government has just established the college “for the heck of it”. “On ground, we have no facilities. No washrooms and no library facility,” they said. “We have no play ground or canteen or any other place where we could take rest. We are suffering. We urge the government to establish more rooms in the college or send us back to Government Degree College (Boys) Pulwama.”
The College Principal, Roshan Ara denied that the students protested. However, she acknowledged that they were facing problems.
“The students did not protest. They simply went to Deputy Commissioner Pulwama to present the memorandum there,” she said. “However, the students are facing difficulties because there are only three class rooms. We have another room for office and library purposes. There are at least five hundred students in the college and we have to adjust them in these rooms only.”
Roshan Ara said “It is a reality that the college is lacking playground, proper toilets. But we have asked the students to wait till the construction of new building is completed.”
