Srinagar: Forecasting a ‘Double Umar’ political union between chief minister Omar Abdullah and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, senior National Conference leader Dr. Mustafa Kamaal on Thursday accused the opposition PDP of fomenting stone-pelting during the Shopian and 2010 agitations.
“A political union between Omar Abdullah and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq cannot be ruled out in Jammu and Kashmir in the near future,” the former NC chief spokesman said in an interview on the third year of the state’s coalition government.
“Recent statements by the Mirwaiz indicate that he has a resonance with the stand of the National Conference,” Dr. Kamaal said. “The position the Mirwaiz adopted on the killing of an NC worker in Batamalu is a welcome development.”
“There is a convergence in the NC’s and the Mirwaiz’ stands. There is hope that if initiatives come from both sides, a ‘Double Umar’ union on the pattern of ‘Double Farooq’ cannot be ruled out,” he said.
The NC leader continued to be his usual critical self for coalition partners Congress, saying that his party had to give major ground for Omar Abdullah’s chief ministership.
“Our party has had to pay a heavy price for the post. We have had to concede key portfolios to the Congress, which has told adversely not only on the NC but also on the Kashmir Valley,” he said.
“Portfolios resting traditionally with Kashmir had to go to the Congress, because of which the NC has suffered immensely at the grassroots level,” he said.
Dr. Kamaal lauded the survival skills of his nephew and chief minister, Omar Abdullah, saying that he had weathered severe political storms during his three-year tenure.
“Omar Abdullah has remained chief minister because of luck, sagacity and his family’s long political background. Otherwise, even the most towering of political leaders could not have been able to extricate himself from the tumult of the past three years,” he said.
“The PDP tried every trick in the book to topple the NC-led government by instigating stone-pelting during the Shopian agitation in 2009 and later in 2010,” he said.
“The turmoil over the Shopian tragedy in 2009, and the 2010 stone-pelting were the handiwork of the PDP, and all this while Mahbooba Mufti took recourse of lie upon lie,” he said.
“Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and Prof Saifuddin Soz are in cohorts, and are forever plotting to topple the NC-led government here while sitting in New Delhi,” he said.
“The Congress is actually a cloak-and-dagger party which had adopted the same tactics against Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah,” he said.
“Our alliance with the state Congress is a compulsion because of the interests of the masses. Otherwise, we know that they can go to any extent for power,” he said.
“Omar Abdullah would be well advised to be on his guard with respect to the Congress in the coming three years as well, as the party will never be cured of its negative mentality,” he said.
“The Congress will be finished in Jammu and Kashmir in the coming years because of its negative politics,” he said.
