Srinagar: Senior BJP leader and Supreme Court lawyer Ram Jethmalani has said that Kashmir Committee headed by him is weighing options of contesting the cases of Kashmiri detained under controversial Public Safety Act in courts.
Sources told KNS that senior SC lawyer expressed his intentions in an informal meeting with Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who had called him at his Akbar Road official residence on Tuesday evening to extend condolences on the demise of Jethmalni’s daughter Rani Jethmalani.
Rani had died of prolonged illness in Breach Candy Hospital Mumbai on Saturday evening. She was a Supreme Court lawyer and was in her early 50’s.
Geelani who is in Delhi for treatment drove to Jetmalani’s residence at Akbar road and offered his condolences to him. Sources told KNS during Geelani’s stay, Jetmalani briefed him about the progress of the cases he is representing in the court including that of Geelani’s close aide G M Bhat, Dr Qasim Faktoo and some other separatist leaders and activists who are lodged in various jails.
Sources said that the former union law minister told Geelani that there were scores of people across India who acknowledge Geelani’s stand on human rights violation and other issues. “But at the same time he urged the separatist leader to highlight other problems being faced by the people on daily basis in Kashmir. Don’t think that there is no one to buy your argument on HR and other issues,” the BJP leader, sources said, told Geelani.
“There are plenty of people who support your stand on HR issues,” Jethmalani told Geelani.
Geelani, sources told KNS urged Jethmalani to speed up the process of the cases he was currently contesting on behalf of Hurriyat leaders. "I have started to study the cases of the youth also who are currently lodged in jails under PSA." Sources quoted Jethmalani as having told Geelani.
Pertinently Jethmalani is the head of Kashmir Committee which has been involved in track II diplomacy seeking a peaceful resolution to Kashmir issue. The Committee had recently restarted its engagement process and has visited Pakistan besides holding series of meetings with separatist leaders including Geelani in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (G) spokesman, Ayaz Akbar confirmedto KNS about Geelani’s meeting with Jeithmalani. “Geelani sahib visited Jethmalani to offer condolences and also thanked him for providing legal counseling to the Kashmiri detainees,” he said.
“Geelani sahib while conveying his sympathies to the bereaved family told BJP Rajay Sabah member that separatists were not against any individual or ideology but were out for a cause,” Ayaz said.
Meanwhile, sources told KNS Geelani is scheduled to meet Pakistan High Commissioner in India, Shahid Malik, Iran ’s and China ’s ambassadors to India during his current stay in New Delhi.
