Sopore, Dec 16: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was Friday attacked with stones and fire pots by infuriated crowd after he refused to move along with the people towards the Main Chowk in North Kashmir's Sopore town, about 55 kilometers from here, sources said.
Sources told Kashmir Dispatch that Mirwaiz addressed the Friday Congregation at Khankah in the apple town this afternoon.
Soon after the congregation got over, Mirwaiz addressed a crowd of about 10,000 people outside the mosque, they added.
People were shouting slogans against India and for Aazadi, they said and added that the crowd was continuously prodding him to move towards the main market in form of a procession.
"The Mirwaiz plainly refused to move towards the main market which is about two kilometers from the place where he was addressing the crowd," they said, adding this infuriated the crowd which hurled stones and fire pots at Mirwaiz.
Sources said the Mirwaiz escaped unhurt, however, at least six people received minor injuries during the clash.
