Srinagar, Dec 1: Lawyers in Kashmir on Thursday observed a strike on the call of Kashmir Bar Association.
The work remained suspended in courts of Srinagar, Baramulla, Budgam, Kulgam, Pulwama, Bandipora, Kupwara, Anantnag, Ganderbal and in other Mufassil courts across the valley.
The work in the High Court Srinagar was badly affected due to the strike, reports said.
A spokesperson of the Bar claimed that in Jammu region the work remained suspended in all the courts as per the schedule, in protest against the government policy on three crucial issues including withdrawal of AFSPA and the state government’s proposal for amendment in Jammu and Kashmir Cr.P.C. and RPC for incorporation of provisions of AFSPA, transfer of registration powers from judicial officers to revenue authorities and diversion of lawyers quota in higher judicial services to the promotion quota of in-service judicial officers.
In Srinagar, a protest rally was led by General Secretary of the Bar Association, Advocate G. N. Shaheen. He reiterated the demand for complete and unconditional withdrawal of AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act from J&K and warned the government for incorporating any amendment in Cr.P.C. of J&K for creating protecting cover to the armed forces. “Such an amendment will lead to disaster situation and will aggravate the human rights situation in J&K,” he added.
The Bar leader demanded that the notification for diversion of lawyers quota to promotional quota in judiciary be withdrawn unconditionally. “The illegality of this notification is already observed by the High Court and has therefore staled its operations but the notification deserves to be withdrawn at the earliest without wasting any more time in the name of pendency of the matter before High Court,” Shaheen added.
The Bar members also demanded that the registration powers shall remain with the judicial officers and the state should desist from transferring the registration powers to the revenue authorities.
The Bar leader appealed the international community to come forward for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
