Srinagar, Dec 30: Terming 2011 as fateful and tragic year, Hurriyat Conference (G) Friday stated that the year would be remembered for Sopore custodial killing, Poonch fake encounter, arrest of minors and their detention under PSA.
“From Indian Home Minister, P Chidambaram to (Chief Minister) Omar Abdullah, everyone tried to project 2011 as peaceful year in Kashmir. But the reality is that silence of graveyard was maintained at gun point and doors of jails and interrogation centers were kept open,” Hurriyat spokesman, Ayaz Akbar said in a statement to KNS.
“If Omar Abdullah and his masters think that by keeping Geelani sahib under house arrest and putting restrictions on movement on pro-freedom leadership, they have achieved anything big, then they are gravely mistaken,” he claimed.
The Hurriyat spokesman said that it was only because of the use of ‘brute force’ that people didn’t come on roads in 2011. “65 years have passed since India occupied Kashmir, but Kashmiris haven’t accepted India ’s rule even for a day. If someone thinks that because of peaceful 2011, Kashmir issue is over, he is living in fools’ paradise,” he added.
Akbar warned that nobody should take situation of 2011 as final. “People, who think Kashmiris are fed up with the movement and repeat of 2010 like situation isn’t possible, are wrong. History is witness that Kashmiris have come out of such situations in the past also. Be it 1971, 1975 or situation after 2008 assembly elections. If restrictions are lifted this time even, people will come on roads like 2008 and 2010 again,” he warned.
The Hurriyat spokesman said that nobody can guess what will be the situation in 2012.
