Four Kashmiri medical students, whom law enforcers picked up a few days ago in Sylhet, were freed Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, a few hours later, the inspector general of police (IGP) confirmed the law enforcers had picked them up. His disclosure came after repeated denial by law enforcers since the Indian nationals were picked up Thursday and Friday.
Tousif Ahmed and Danesh Batt, third and fourth year MBBS students, and interns Tosaddek Rashid and Amir Amin Reshmi of the college hailed from the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Confirming their release, Maj Gen (retd) Nazmul Islam, principal of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, told The Daily Star that the four were dropped in front of the college at about 6:30 am.
The principal said the four were boarded on a microbus that drove them to the college, our Sylhet correspondent reported.
But he could not disclose who dropped them there.
Meanwhile, talking to journalists after a meeting at the home ministry Sunday morning, IGP Hassan Mahmood Khandker admitted that law enforcers picked up the four Indian nationals in Sylhet.
He however declined to say why and who picked up the four students.
Asked whether the students were arrested in connection with bomb blast at New Delhi High Court in September, Home Minister Shahara Khatun declined to comment saying that she could not comment on such an ‘sensitive’ incident.
Informing that an investigation is underway in connection with the picking up of the four, Shahara said it is not the proper time to make any comment now.
Since the four Indian nationals were picked up by unidentified plain-clothes people, neither police not Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) admitted their involvement in the incident.
Plain-clothes lawmen picked up the four on Thursday and Friday in connection with last month's bomb blast in New Delhi.
Contacted, principal of the college told The Daily Star that plain-clothes RAB men had picked them up from the campus.
The lawmen also released Rashid Ahmed, assistant registrar of the hospital in South Surma suburb of Sylhet city on Saturday after picked him up from his office Thursday afternoon.
