Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday said the Kashmir movement was a genuine people’s movement and it was not sponsored or controlled from any quarter.
“Kashmiris’ freedom movement will continue till the objective of freedom is completely achieved in spite of different ups and downs,” Mirwaiz said while addressing a packed press conference in London.
“We are neither against Indians living in India or elsewhere as Diaspora. In fact we want the people of India to know the real facts about the Kashmir issue. What we are against is the unethical and brutal policies of New Delhi which it pursues continuously with impunity in Jammu & Kashmir resulting in disappearances, fake encounters, arrests, torture and mass graves,” Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz thanked the British Parliament Members for participating in the Kashmir debate and unfolding a proactive agenda for ensuring the restoration of democratic rights of the people. “Kashmiris right of self-determination is overwhelmingly supported by the members of the Parliament who participated in the debate,” he said, appreciating the efforts of lord Nazir Ahmed, Chairman of All Parties Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, Steve Baker MP from High Wycombe, Lord Qurban of Luton and Mahboob Bhatti.
Mirwaiz lauded the collective support of British Kashmiri Diaspora for putting Kashmir on a proper radar. He supported the call for an international commission to probe the alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir. A fact finding mission by a credible international institution must also visit Kashmir, he said, appealing to all parliaments in Europe in particular and world parliaments in general to raise the issue of Kashmir as it had a human dimension as well. “I am surprised as to why Indian Parliament did not debate the issue of mass graves in Kashmir,” he said.
Mirwaiz supported India-Pakistan engagement for dialogue but made it clear that inclusion of Kashmiris’ authentic voice was essential. “The dialogue must be time bound, productive and meaningful. Human right situation should be improved and all draconian laws repealed, democratic right of dissent should be conceded and political leadership given a space and the atmosphere of repression in the shape of frequent arrests ended.”
Earlier, lord Nazir welcomed Mirwaiz as “an honoured guest from a land of suffering.” He hailed the sacrifices of the people of Kashmir. Barrister Majid Tramboo and Nazir Ahmed Shawl thanked Ahmed for his efforts “to keep the torch of Kashmir burning.” Others who were present included councilor Mahboob Bhatti, Asma Ayub and Councilor Riaz Bhat.
“On this occasion lord Nazir Ahmad presented a copy of the full debate held in the British House of Commons and Asma Ayub the resolution on self-determination adopted by Luton council,” said a spokesman of the Hurriyat.
