Srinagar: The chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Friday called for a complete shutdown on May 21 to commemorate the death anniversaries of slain separatist leaders Mirwaiz Moulana Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
Addressing the Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid here, Mirwaiz while announcing the martyrdom week programme of the conglomerate, said that there would be a complete shutdown in the Valley on May 21 but transport to Eidgah would be exempted from the strike.
“The objective to commemorate this week is to remember the sacrifices of thousands of people and leaders who rendered their lives for the sake of freedom,” he said, adding,
“Conscious nations don’t forget sacrifices of their martyrs.”
The pro-freedom leader said that Hurriyat is holding a rally at martyrs’ graveyard Eidgah Srinagar on May 21 to reaffirm their allegiance towards the mission of martyrs.
“There would be Quran recitation competition on May 17 and a seminar titled Kashmir - A Way Forward would be organizedon May 18 at the headquarters of the Hurriyat,” he said.
Mirwaiz further said that Anjumani-Nusrat-ul-Islam is holding a debate on “Trends of waywardness in new generation and their remedy” on May 19.
“A blood donation and medical camp would be held in the premises of Jamia Masjid on May 20 and on the same day after Friday prayers there would be a rally at Mirwaiz Manzil,” he said, adding that Peoples Conference is organizing a rally on May 22 in Kupwara.
Mirwaiz said the amalgam would speed up its efforts on external front for the resolution of Kashmir issue.
“We are continuing efforts on the political, diplomatic, internal and external fronts for the past15 years and in view of the new global situation in Middle East, the world has responsibility and we are hopeful it would fulfill its duty,” he said.
“On external front, there is United Nations, European Union, Organization of Islamic Conference and other institutions having faith in democracy and justice,” he added.
