PULWAMA — In a considerable initiative aimed at addressing the health challenges faced by construction workers, the Health and Safety Department of NCC Limited, in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Awantipora, organized a medical camp on Friday at the CPWD facility of AIIMS Awantipora.

The event, which witnessed overwhelming participation from officials, staff, and labourers, focused on screening and addressing the health risks unique to workers engaged in physically demanding jobs.

As someone who has covered health developments for the past decade, it is evident that such camps are essential, especially for labourers in industries like construction, where physical strain often translates into a range of health problems. From muscular disorders to respiratory issues, these workers endure constant exposure to conditions that heighten the risk of illness. This camp, therefore, plays a vital role in offering preventive care.

According to Faisal Alam Bhat, in charge of the Health Department at NCC Limited, the medical camp epitomizes the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility. "Given the nature of the work here, it's imperative to ensure that workers receive timely health check-ups. Our aim is to make these camps a regular occurrence," Bhat said, indicating that similar initiatives, such as annual blood donation drives, are already being conducted.

By midday, over 200 patients had been examined by the medical team, with that number expected to rise to 500 by the end of the day. The patients not only received free diagnostic tests but were also provided with necessary medications on the spot.

The feedback from those attending the camp reflected the value of this initiative. "The doctors were thorough in their examinations, and the entire process was seamless. I feel reassured after today's visit," said KSM Raju, a labourer who was among the first to be treated.

Another worker, Pintu Kumar Yadav, applauded the collaboration between NCC Limited and AIIMS, remarking, "It’s heartening to see such proactive steps being taken for our health."

This effort, Bhat stressed, is not a one-off. "We are duty-bound to making these medical camps a regular feature," he reiterated, stating that the health of workers remains a priority for NCC Limited.

PULWAMA — The Friday following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi was observed across the Union Territory with religious fervour. In this connection, hundreds of devotees participated in Eid-e-Milad procession in southern Kashmir's Pulwama town.

The procession was taken out from multiple areas of Pulwama town and later culminated near Jamia Masjid Pulwama.

While raising slogans of the highness of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), people in large numbers thronged the Pulwama market. Holding green flags, people from various areas participated in the Milad procession.

Mohammad Akram, Mirwaiz for Pulwama district, was leading the procession. Speaking on the occasion, Mirwaiz said that they are grateful for the occasion as it provided them with the opportunity to observe the Friday following Eid-e-Milad Nabi with a large number of devotees.

"We have the chance to demonstrate our unity as Muslims on this day, which serves as a reminder that all Muslims are the same throughout the world," he continued.

PULWAMA — Pulwama Police issued a statement in which it said that legal action has been initiated against a group of 'miscreants' who attempted to disrupt the voting process at a polling station in Bellow village in Rajpora Assembly constituency on Wednesday.

As per the police, the incident occurred around 1 pm when several individuals entered the polling station and began 'harassing' voters, creating a tense atmosphere.

"Security forces stationed at the site intervened, removing the group from the premises without halting the voting process, which continued uninterrupted," a police spokesman said.

Outside the polling station, as per the official, the situation escalated when the 'miscreants' confronted law enforcement officials, including SHO Rajpora and his team, and threatened to block a nearby road.

Despite the provocation, police said, security personnel handled the situation with restraint, dispersing the crowd without causing harm or injury.

The Pulwama Police confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against those involved in the disturbance.

It is pertinent to mention here that BJP leader and Rajpora Assembly Constituency candidate Arshad Bhat visited the polling station in Bellow village, where a commotion erupted.

Speaking to the media, Bhat accused the local police, particularly the SHO of Rajpora Police Station, of showing bias during the election process. However, eyewitnesses accused the BJP candidate of kicking a National Conference worker near the polling station and disrupting the voting process in the polling station.

SRINAGAR — National Conference (NC) leader Bashir Ahmad Nengroo on Sunday criticized the BJP-led Central government, accusing it of undermining secular principles with the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.

Nengroo, speaking exclusively with The Kashmir Pulse from Pulwama district in southern Kashmir, said the bill is a direct attack on the Constitutional rights of Muslims and threatens to strip Waqf properties from the community. “The BJP is using this bill to grab Muslim properties and marginalize the community in India’s democratic setup,” he said.

He further accused the government of consistently targeting minority groups, particularly Muslims, through divisive and hateful politics. "They advocate Ram Rajya, but their actions are harmful to minorities," Nengroo added.

He urged parliamentarians to reflect on the historical contributions of Muslims, particularly during India's freedom struggle. Nengroo reaffirmed the NC’s commitment to equal rights for all, regardless of religion, region, or caste, and emphasized the party's dedication to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh, and working towards the reinstatement of Article 370.

Nengroo also questioned the BJP's claims of improved security in Kashmir, pointing to ongoing attacks that continue to claim the lives of security forces. "The BJP cherry-picks what to highlight, ignoring the ongoing violence in the region," he said.

The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 has drawn criticism from several opposition leaders who see it as an effort to dilute the rights of Muslims in India.

It is in place to state here that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8, 2024. It seeks to repeal Mussalman Wakf Act, 1923 and amend the Waqf Act, 1995. The Act regulates Waqf property in India and defines Waqf as an endowment of movable or immovable property for purposes considered pious, religious, or charitable under Muslim law. The Bill renames the Act to ‘United Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995’.

PULWAMA — The death of a young woman from Arihal village of southern Kashmir's Pulwama district due to alleged medical negligence on Saturday has sent shockwaves through the area and also prompted the local administration to launch an immediate investigation.

Saboora Arshid, daughter of Arshid Ahmad, died after she was admitted to Mohammadia Nursing Home in Gangoo area of Pulwama district. According to the family, Saboora’s condition unexpectedly worsened after she was taken to the operation theatre for surgery on her nose.

"She was taken to SMHS Hospital Srinagar without informing the family as the surgery by ENT specialist Dr Showkat Tak started at around 3 pm and there was no update for hours together. This surgery was supposed to take about 15 minutes to an hour as the maximum time. They used a backdoor to take her to SMHS Hospital Srinagar while the family was waiting outside the operation theatre," Furkan Hamid, the cousin of Saboora said while speaking to The Kashmir Pulse.

He added that the body of the deceased was denied even when the family reached SMHS Hospital Srinagar and it was only after chasing their vehicle that the family managed to get the body at around 11 pm.

Saboora’s family, devastated by the loss, is calling for a time-bound and thorough probe into the incident. "We know this is a case of medical negligence and a similar incident happened earlier at District Hospital Pulwama but no strict action followed. However, we hope that the district administration and the local police will thoroughly investigate the case and deliver justice in a timebound manner," Furkan Hamid said.

He lamented, “Saboora went to the hospital seeking a cure for her nose bleeding problem as she was recommended to undergo the surgery but we did not expect that the minor surgery would lead her to death. At least, the doctors should have informed the family if her condition deteriorated. We deserve to know what happened and we expect an investigation based on facts.”

The untimely death of the young woman stirred sharp reactions from the netizens and prompted the local administration to order an enquiry. Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama, Dr Basharat Qayoom (IAS) ordered an inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

Dr Qayoom also directed the Tehsildar, along with the Chief Medical Officer and the Station House Officer (SHO) to seal the operation theatre where Saboora had undergone surgery, ensuring all documentation remains intact.

The district administration also ensured that the sealing process would be videographed to maintain transparency. “This was done to preserve evidence and ensure the investigation is conducted fairly,” an official said.

The district administration has assured the public that the inquiry will be conducted with the highest level of scrutiny to address the family's concerns and restore public confidence.

PULWAMA — As the political turf of Jammu and Kashmir intensifies ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, the Youth Wing President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s candidate for the Pulwama constituency, spoke in an exclusive video interview on Saturday, offering insights into his political journey, the PDP’s future, and the issues closest to his heart.

Para, who will be contesting in the Assembly elections scheduled for September 18, detailed his motivations for joining the PDP. In conversation with Showkat Dar of The Kashmir Pulse, he explained how witnessing Mehbooba Mufti’s campaigning during a time of deep unrest in the Valley profoundly influenced his decision to align with the party.

“The Valley was gripped by an atmosphere of fear and arrests by the SOG wing of J&K Police, and it was Mehbooba Mufti's campaigns and her commitment to youth empowerment that drew me toward PDP,” Para recalled. He formally joined the party in 2013, recognizing the need to engage young people in a democratic process.

A Youth-Centered Political Vision

Para, who has become a prominent voice for the youth in Kashmir, emphasized that his political involvement stems from a desire to shift perceptions of young Kashmiris. "At a time when youth were often seen as stone-pelters or engaged in violence, I wanted to change that narrative and encourage democratic engagement," Para said.

He believes that while challenges remain, positive changes are beginning to take root. “I am convinced that we are witnessing a shift, and my work will focus on ensuring that this momentum benefits the youth of Kashmir.”

Para is confident that his work with the youth will remain a central part of his political career. "The welfare of the youth will continue to be my priority, as I feel we need to explore better democratic avenues to address the aspirations and frustrations they face."

Addressing the Competition

Regarding the competition he faces from Khalil Bhand, the National Conference (NC) candidate from the same constituency, Para admitted that the battle would be close.

“PDP has a strong base in south Kashmir, and we acknowledge that the competition is tough. However, we are confident that the work done by Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti during their tenures will be remembered by the people,” Para stated, noting that the party’s past governance has left a lasting impression.

In addition to discussing the Pulwama constituency, Para also addressed the recent split in Shopian, where several PDP leaders left the party, some joining other political parties and others opting to contest as independents.

“We have to take feedback from the ground, and sometimes, mistakes do happen,” Para said, acknowledging the party's internal challenges. “It is not always possible to keep every member equally satisfied when decisions are made. However, the PDP still has a strong base in Shopian, and efforts are underway to strengthen and unify the cadre.”

Impact of Independent Candidates and Small Parties

With the number of independent candidates and smaller parties, like the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), contesting in this election, Para admitted there could be an impact on vote shares. “It will certainly split the votes to some degree,” he said. “But it is also the right of every citizen in a democracy to contest, and we respect that right.”

A Vision for Pulwama

Para’s vision for Pulwama extends beyond just the electoral contest. He outlined his plans if elected, focusing on several key areas: addressing the cases of youth imprisoned for political reasons, improving the district’s health sector, ensuring that local residents benefit from the district’s mining contracts, and resolving longstanding drinking water issues.

“The cases of jailed youth (for political reasons) will be my top priority,” Para stated. “We need to work toward resolving these issues so that these young people can lead productive lives.”

Additionally, he stressed the need to develop Pulwama’s healthcare infrastructure, calling it a pressing concern for residents. “There are significant gaps in the health sector, and I will work to bridge those.”

In his vision for the district’s economic future, Para pledged to prioritize local involvement in the allocation of mining contracts, which he sees as a crucial avenue for economic empowerment. “Our people should be the beneficiaries of Pulwama’s natural resources,” he said.

Personal Reflections

The interview also veered briefly into Para’s personal life, touching on his marriage plans. “I have many cases filed against me and have only recently been released from jail,” Para said, alluding to the legal battles he has faced. “Once things normalize, I will be in a better position to make personal decisions in a calmer state of mind.”

Looking Ahead

Given that Waheed-ur-Rehman Para is preparing for the electoral contest in Pulwama, his message remains centered on the youth, their future, and the need for political and economic reforms. His journey from a young observer of Mehbooba Mufti’s campaigns to a key figure in PDP is an indication of the values he champions. Focussed on tackling the pressing challenges, Para is hoping to carry forward the legacy of the PDP, while also forging a path for a new generation of Kashmiri leaders.

PULWAMA — National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Friday launched a scathing attack on Engineer Rashid, calling him an "agent" of the Centre. Abdullah said this while interacting with reporters in Shopian during an election rally.

When asked about Engineer Rashid's release from jail, Abdullah said, "You know this yourself. Everyone knows this. We are not afraid. No matter how many engineers are released, no one can destroy the National Conference."

The National Conference leader expressed his commitment to the people of Kashmir, saying, "I only have faith in Allah and I have faith in these people."

Dr Abdullah criticized PM Modi for his remarks on Muslim population growth, saying, "Muslims never steal anyone's Mangalsutra; they are committed and law-abiding people."

He emphasized that Muslims are not against India but against the forced imposition of religion and discrimination.

The National Conference leader condemned the "fake propaganda" spread by the BJP, alleging that they have "looted all of India."

He expressed concern over the aim of India being distorted to fuel fighting among communities. Dr Abdullah rejected the idea of an India where religion is used to discriminate and bulldozers are used to destroy Islamic schools.

Meanwhile, the NC patron also visited the residence of Bashir Ahmad Nengroo in Pulwama where a brief ceremony was held during which Bashir Nengroo announced his rejoining the National Conference.

While speaking to the media, Farooq Abdullah said the BJP is trying to divide people in the upcoming Assembly elections. He said the Centre is responsible for shattering the trust of people by taking decisions like August 5, 2019 (scrapping of Article 370).

PULWAMA — Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and candidate for the upcoming Assembly elections in the Pulwama constituency, drew thousands of supporters to a campaign rally in Arihal village on Thursday.

The event saw a lively display of support, with chants of encouragement and women singing traditional folk songs, showering Waheed Para with candies as a token of their affection.

In his address, Para positioned himself as the "lone voice" advocating for the real issues faced by the people of Pulwama. He pledged to highlight the plight of political prisoners, particularly the youth, and to address the rampant unemployment and other challenges hindering a better quality of life for the current generation.

“If elected as an MLA, I will continue to listen to the people's issues by visiting village after village," Para said, pointing to his commitment to remaining accessible and responsive to the public's concerns.

The overwhelming turnout and spirited atmosphere at the rally signalled significant local support for Para, as he vowed to prioritize speaking of the people's issues and needs in his campaign.

PULWAMA — An air-conditioned reading hall, Bait-ul-Ilm, aimed at providing free study space for students preparing for competitive exams, was inaugurated on Saturday in Pulwama in the presence of prominent figures and local citizens.

Located opposite the old District Court Complex in Pulwama, the facility offers a range of amenities, including separate rest-rooms for male and female students, Wi-Fi, and a collection of books for various competitive exams such as NEET UG, NEET PG, JEE, NTA NET, JKSSB, and NDA. The reading hall is open 24/7 and welcomes students from the 10th standard onwards.

Omar Farooq, a resident of Pathan village in Pulwama and the philanthropist behind the initiative, said he was inspired to provide such a space for students and job-seekers in his hometown after witnessing similar facilities outside Jammu and Kashmir.

“There are no charges at all for using the facility. I wanted to create a conducive environment for the youth in my hometown to prepare for competitive exams,” Omar said.

The reading hall offers individual study stations, which can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The initiative has been widely praised by local residents and students alike, who see it as a much-needed resource in the area.

SRINAGAR — The Rajpora Assembly segment in southern Kashmir's Pulwama district is set to witness a close contest between four candidates from three regional and one national party.

According to the news agency KNO, the five candidates in the running include Ghulam Mohiudin Mir of the National Conference (NC), Syed Bashir Ahmad of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Ghulam Nabi Wani of Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Mudasir Hassan of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Arshid Ahmad Bhat of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Ghulam Mohiudin Mir

A resident of Murran village in Pulwama district, Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir was the MLA for the Rajpora constituency in 1996 but has lost the last three consecutive elections to PDP candidates. He has been working hard over the past several months to win over voters and is considered one of the main contenders for the Rajpora seat.

Syed Bashir Ahmad Shah

Syed Bashir Ahmad Shah, a resident of the Rajpora area, won the Assembly elections twice, in 2002 and 2008. However, he was expelled from the PDP in 2014 for anti-party activities after the mandate was given to Haseeb Drabu, who went on to win the seat.

Syed later ran as an independent candidate and garnered around 5,500 votes. He briefly switched to the Apni Party but has now rejoined the PDP and is contesting the elections on the party's ticket, aiming for a third win.

Ghulam Nabi Niloora

An engineer by profession, Ghulam Nabi Niloora entered politics as his father and brother had both served as MLAs for NC on three occasions. His father, Ghulam Qadir Wani, passed away, and his brother, Nazir Ahmad Wani, was killed in the 1990s.

Despite his association with NC, Wani ran as an independent candidate in 2014 after being denied a mandate, receiving approximately 6,500 votes. Now contesting on a DPAP ticket, Wani is the only candidate from the Shahoora hamlet, which consists of about two dozen villages.

Analysts believe that if he can secure a good number of votes from his area, he could significantly influence the outcome.

Mudasir Hassan

Mudasir Hassan, a resident of the Rajpora area, is also emerging as a key contender. He enjoys strong support in his native area and has been conducting door-to-door campaigning to attract more voters, positioning himself as one of the top contenders for the seat.

Arshid Ahmad Bhat

Arshid Ahmad Bhat, a BJP candidate, has also been actively campaigning throughout the constituency and is expected to take a significant share of votes.

According to analysts, Ghulam Nabi Wani could once again split NC's votes, which could benefit the PDP. However, PDP's decision to field a candidate who was expelled in 2014 and only recently rejoined the party might pose challenges in mobilising workers, they said.

In 2014, Ghulam Mohiudin Mir and Ghulam Nabi Wani jointly received around 21,000 votes, while Drabu secured 18,000 votes, with the division in NC's votes benefiting PDP. A similar scenario could unfold again, according to analysts.

Votes from the Shahoora hamlet are expected to play a key role, and the outcome may hinge on this area.

AC 35-Rajpora is the largest constituency in the district, with 1,09,543 registered voters, including 54,554 males, 54,983 females, and 6 transgender individuals.

SRINAGAR — With the J&K Assembly elections around the corner, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has prohibited the use of children for election-related activities in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

As per the news agency CNS, the ECI has said that the directive is aimed at preventing child labour and exploitation in line with the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.

Giving a stern warning, ECI said that the political candidates and parties should refrain from getting children involved in any campaign activities, including rallies, chanting, and distribution of posters.

To check compliance with the given directive, the Commission has said that it will monitor adherence to these regulations closely and take legal action against any violations.

SRINAGAR — For the first time since the onset of militancy, a Kashmiri Pandit woman is running for office in Kashmir. Daisy Raina, a former Sarpanch of Trichal village in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district, is one of nine women candidates competing in the first phase of the Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, scheduled for September 18.

Raina is representing the Republican Party of India, a party allied with the NDA.

Speaking with the news agency KNO, Raina said she decided to enter politics after the encouragement of local residents, particularly the youth, who were “impressed” by her work as a Sarpanch over the past five years.

Daisy said the political and social environment in J&K has changed a lot since the 1990s. “Despite facing numerous challenges, I continued my work with strong support from the community,” she said, adding, “My candidacy is made possible by the support of local people with whom I have close relationships and am deeply involved in their lives.”

Raina said her main focus areas, if elected, would be addressing unemployment, improving access to potable water and reducing electricity bills. She expressed concern over the struggles faced by youth born after the 1980s, saying they have grown up amid conflict and hardship, including disruptions like Hartals and limited 2G network access.

“These individuals, who have persevered through these challenges, deserve employment opportunities and a dignified life,” she said.

The former Sarpanch also highlighted the impact of unemployment on mental health, saying the Hindu community, along with others, has experienced restrictions that confine their movement and limit their quality of life. “There is a need for increased efforts to foster integration and mutual welfare among different communities,” she said.

Choosing the Republican Party of India, which is associated with Dr B R Ambedkar, Raina expressed confidence that she could continue her positive work with the party's support.

She also criticised the current administrative practices, saying that qualified youth are often sidelined while officers are assigned multiple positions simultaneously.

In her message, Daisy Raina said that Hindu-Muslim unity is stronger on the ground. She lamented that due to unknown reasons, some people are showing that all isn't well in Kashmir.

“I encourage everyone to cast their votes in the upcoming elections to showcase the strong Hindu-Muslim unity that still exists,” she said.

PULWAMA — The District Election Officer (DEO) Pulwama has suspended Naib Tehsildar Abdul Majeed Naik for negligence and dereliction of duty.

Naik, who was deployed as a magistrate in the Flying Squad Team (FST), failed to perform his responsibilities in accordance with the guidelines set for election duty.

As per the news agency KNO, the officer has been attached to the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Tral for further action.

The ADC Tral has been directed to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a detailed report to the District Election Officer for further course of action.

This step has been taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing election process and the DEO has warned all officers and officials to be careful and exercise duties with diligence.

PULWAMA — In a major breakthrough, Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested a militant associate during a Naka checking at Karimabad crossing, where the suspect was intercepted, in southern Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The arrested individual has been identified as Arsalan Ahmad Sheikh son of Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh, resident of Karimabad village.

During the search, a hand grenade was recovered from the possession of the suspect, as per the police statement.

Investigations, police said, revealed that the accused had planned to lob the grenade at the Naka party, posing a serious threat to security forces and public safety. The timely action by the Pulwama Police thwarted the attack, preventing any potential loss of life or injury.

Accordingly, a case has been registered under FIR No. 182/2024, under Sections 4/5 Explosives Act and Sections 18, 23 of UAPA Act in Police Station Pulwama.

The investigation has been set into motion to uncover further details and possible links to other militant activities in the area.

PULWAMA — The Health and Safety Department of NCC Limited, in collaboration with the Government Bone and Joint Hospital Srinagar and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Awantipora, successfully organized a blood donation camp at Central Public Works Department (CPWD) facility of AIIMS Awantipora on Tuesday. This is the third consecutive year that NCC Limited has hosted this life-saving event.

The camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, staff and volunteers. It was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of blood donation and meeting the increasing demand for blood in local hospitals.

Faisal Alam Bhat, in-charge of the Health Department at NCC Limited, described the initiative as a vital component of the company’s social responsibility efforts.

“Donating blood is a noble act that can save lives in critical situations,” said Bhat. “We aim to inspire more people, especially the youth, to overcome any fears they may have and join this cause. Blood donation is not just about giving; it is about community and humanity.”

He highlighted the numerous health benefits of donating blood, including reducing the risk of heart disease and certain cancers and improving overall cardiovascular health.

Bhat also outlined the eligibility criteria for donors, noting that donors must be between 18 and 65 years old, in good health, and not on any medication that could affect the safety of the donation.

“We have set up proper screening procedures to ensure that only eligible donors are allowed to donate,” he added. “This ensures the safety of both the donors and the recipients of the blood.”

Participants praise camp’s organization and facilities

Participants at the camp expressed their satisfaction with the event’s organization and the facilities provided. Refreshments were available for all donors, who were also given information on the benefits of regular blood donation. Many participants were first-time donors who appreciated the smooth and supportive process facilitated by the health professionals present.

“I was initially nervous about donating blood, but the staff here made me feel comfortable,” said one of the donors, Gurunadha Rao. “They explained the process in detail, and the facilities were excellent. I now feel proud to have contributed to such a noble cause.”

Another participant, Vinayak praised the collaboration between the various institutions involved. “This partnership has been instrumental in making the camp a success. It is heartening to see so many people come forward to donate blood,” he said. “These donations are crucial, especially in emergencies when lives depend on the availability of blood.”

Commitment to continued blood donation drives

Bhat confirmed that NCC Limited’s Health and Safety Department is committed to continuing these blood donation drives in the future. “Our goal is to make this an annual event that brings together the community, healthcare providers, and organizations committed to saving lives,” he said.

He added, “We believe that every drop of blood donated can make a difference and are dedicated to promoting a culture of regular blood donation in Pulwama.”

He also stressed the need for greater public awareness around blood donation. “Many people still have misconceptions and fears about donating blood,” Bhat said, adding, “Through such initiatives, we aim to dispel these myths and encourage more people to donate.”

A call for more volunteers

As the camp concluded, organizers reiterated their call for more volunteers to join future blood donation efforts. “We are thankful to all who participated and made this event a success,” said Bhat.

PULWAMA — As the first phase of the Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir draws near, the Pulwama Assembly segment in southern Kashmir is set to witness a closely contested race. This seat is expected to see a tight battle between the National Conference's (NC) Mohammad Khalil Bhand, who has previously won this seat three times on a People's Democratic Party ticket, and Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, the youth leader of the PDP.

According to the news agency KNO, Bhand, a former minister in both PDP-led governments, secured the Pulwama seat in 2002, 2008, and 2014. However, he recently switched allegiance to the NC, and it remains to be seen how this move will affect his chances of winning.

Political analysts said that Bhand's work during his first tenure as Roads and Buildings (R&B) Minister in the 2002-2008 PDP-Congress government helped him maintain a stronghold on the seat. However, his performance from 2008-2014, when he was in opposition, and after 2014, was perceived as less effective, especially with several infrastructure projects left incomplete.

They said that during his third term as MLA, Khalil experienced internal conflicts within the PDP. Although initially given charge of the Agriculture Department, he was not appointed to a ministerial position, which led to disagreements, and he eventually shifted to the NC after the government collapsed.

The PDP has nominated Waheed Para, who garnered huge support in the Parliamentary elections for the Srinagar seat, with around 200,000 votes. Para received leads in both the Pulwama and Rajpora Assembly segments during those elections and is anticipated to provide a strong challenge to Bhand in the upcoming contest.

Notably, after delimitation, Para's native area, previously part of the Rajpora constituency, has now been included in the Pulwama constituency, while Litter Tehsil, where Bhand traditionally had a strong voter base, has moved to Rajpora.

Both Bhand and Para have been actively campaigning to attract voters, and political analysts suggest that Syed Bari Andrabi, the District Development Council (DDC) Chairperson of Pulwama who recently resigned from the PDP, could play a decisive role in the election. Andrabi's endorsement could influence around 1,000 to 2,000 votes and impact the election outcome.

Talat Majeed Wani, a former member of Jamaat-e-Islami who is contesting as an independent after being associated with the Apni Party, might also attract a substantial number of votes that could sway the results, analysts believe.

Historically, the Pulwama seat has seen various representatives, including Master Sanaullah Sheikh in 1962, Sonaullah Dar of Congress in 1967 and 1972, Mohammad Ibrahim Dar of NC in 1977 and 1983, and Bashir Ahmad Nengro of NC in 1987 and 1996. Since then, Khalil Bhand has held the seat for the PDP.

The Pulwama Assembly segment, AC 34, consists of 99,555 voters, including 49,423 males, 50,130 females, and 2 transgender individuals. To ensure a smooth electoral process, 112 polling stations have been designated for this constituency.

PULWAMA — The village of Inder in southern Kashmir's Pulwama district came alive with traditional fervour on Wednesday as thousands of devotees gathered to honour the memory of revered Sufi poet and saint Soch Kral. The annual festival, held at the poet's shrine, drew men and women, young and old, who travelled from across southern Kashmir to pay tribute to the saint.

The day was marked by deep reverence and an outpouring of love for the poet, whose verses continue to resonate with the people of Kashmir. Devotees were seen reciting Soch Kral's poetry and recounting stories of his life, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sufi saint.

On a stage set up in a nearby park, artists performed Soch Kral’s poetry, accompanied by traditional Kashmiri musical instruments. The performances, infused with the mystical spirit of Sufi traditions, moved many in the crowd, bringing them closer to the spiritual essence of the poet’s work.

"The words of Soch Kral are not just poetry; they are a guide to living a meaningful life," said Ghulam Hassan, a resident of Ugergund village. "His teachings on love, peace, and devotion have touched the hearts of generations."

For many, the annual visit to the shrine is an opportunity to connect with the Sufi traditions that are a cornerstone of Kashmiri culture. Visitors shared their personal reflections on the poet's impact on their lives.

"Coming here every year is a reminder of our roots and our rich cultural heritage," said Farooq Ahmad, a visitor from Shopian. "Soch Kral's poetry has a way of speaking to the soul, and being here, surrounded by his words and the melodies of our traditional music, is a deeply spiritual experience."

The festival also served as a moment of togetherness, as people from different walks of life mingled and shared their admiration for the poet.

"Today, we celebrate not just a poet, but a philosophy of life that has shaped our collective identity," said Mohammad Yasin, a scholar who attended the event. "Soch Kral's message of universal love and compassion is more relevant today than ever.

PULWAMA — Aamir Hamid Wani, a young talent from Dadoora village of southern Kashmir's Pulwama district, has made history by becoming the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to be selected for the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) with a base price of Rs 9 lakh.

Aamir, while speaking to the news agency KNO from Mumbai, said his passion for kabaddi began in childhood.

He has been training at Mid Line Academy in Mumbai for the past four years, working hard and playing at various levels before being picked by the Jaipur Pink Panthers in the PKL auction. "I am confident that I will perform well in the upcoming competitions. My ultimate goal is to represent India," he said.

Aamir expressed his gratitude to his coach, Aniket Mhatre, and the J&K Kabaddi Association for their support during his journey.

He said that while Jammu and Kashmir has indoor stadiums, most youth in the region are more interested in cricket, with Kabaddi receiving much less attention. "There is immense talent in J&K. If youth get interested in Kabaddi and are properly nurtured, they can achieve great things," he added.

His father, Abdul Hamid Wani, said Aamir's passion for Kabaddi was first recognised by a Physical Education Teacher, Faisal, at Government Degree College Pulwama.

"Faisal Sahab encouraged Aamir to pursue the sport and took him to Srinagar for training. After a year, Aamir moved to Mumbai to follow his dreams, facing numerous challenges, including financial difficulties. To support himself, my son sold dry fruits while training at his academy in Mumbai," he said.

Wani also credited coach Aniket Mhatre for playing a crucial role in Aamir's development and helping him achieve this milestone. He urged the government to develop better sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, saying there is an untapped potential for many talented youth in the region who could represent the country at various levels.

Aamir has already represented J&K in the Yuva Kabaddi Series held in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh in 2021.

SRINAGAR — A flood-like situation was witnessed in Keller area of southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday after the cloudburst occurred at Chowgam Kellar area while the rains lashed most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing down the mercury across the Union Territory.

As per the details available with the news agency KNO, the cloudburst at Chowgam Kellar led to a flood-like situation today as the muddy water entered several residential houses. Although no damage occurred due to the incident, the muddy water has entered the residential houses in the hamlet today, the locals informed.

Flash floods also hit Achgoza village in the Valley's southern district of Pulwama. The village in Rajpora Tehsil of the district experienced severe disruption last night due to flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in the nearby forest area.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng said the sudden cloudburst resulted in the rapid accumulation of water, submerging the village and several residential properties.

A local resident described the situation, saying the water rose so quickly that they had no time to react. "Within minutes, our homes were submerged, and we had to evacuate hastily."

Another resident expressed relief that the water levels are now receding. Currently, water levels are decreasing, allowing villagers to begin assessing the damage and cleaning up.

DC Pulwama, Basharat Qayoom said the situation is being closely monitored and efforts are underway to provide necessary assistance to the affected families.

Meanwhile, below normal temperature was recorded at all the stations across Jammu and Kashmir as the rainfall continued from the wee hours of this morning till the afternoon.

As per the details, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a rainfall of 8.8mm from 8:30 this morning to 5:30 in the evening.

Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir, has recorded a precipitation of just 1.2mm while Pahalgam recorded 6.2mm during the period. Kupwara, Kokernag and Gulmarg recorded precipitation of 1.3mm, 1.4mm and 2.2mm respectively.

According to the details, Jammu’s Batote has recorded the highest precipitation with 24.9mm in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am followed by 4.8mm in Banihal.

Meanwhile, the weatherman has predicted the possibility of a brief spell of rain and thundershower at a few places during daytime and light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places of J&K towards late night or early morning during the next three days till August 20.

Director Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that there is a possibility of a brief spell of rain and thundershower at a few places during daytime and light to moderate rain and thundershower at isolated places of J&K towards late night or early morning from August 21 to August 23.

The MeT has also predicted the possibility of intense showers for brief periods and heavy rainfall in Jammu division that may lead to flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones over vulnerable places of J&K during the next three days.

PULWAMA — In a series of coordinated operations, Pulwama Police have achieved significant breakthroughs across multiple fronts, arresting thieves and drug peddlers as well as seizing tippers for illegal mining.

In the first operation, Pulwama Police arrested three individuals involved in a theft case reported by Irshad Ahmad Dar, a resident of Lajoora Pulwama.

The theft, which occurred at an under-construction Sheep Building in Dangerpora Pulwama, led to the registration of FIR No. 163/2024. Following intensive questioning, the suspects—Sheraz Ahmad Bhat of Keller, Mehrooz Mushtaq and Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir of Dangerpora—confessed to the crime.

The stolen water pump was recovered, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In a separate anti-drug operation, Pulwama Police set up a checkpoint at Gangoo Pulwama, resulting in the arrest of two notorious drug peddlers.

The police intercepted a truck driven by Sukhdev Singh of Punjab, recovering 15 kg of poppy straw. Further investigation led to the arrest of Mohammad Yousuf Gadda of Gangoo, who was also found in possession of a substantial quantity of poppy straw.

FIR No. 166/2024 has been registered, and police anticipate further arrests as part of their intensified crackdown on drug trafficking in the area.

Adding to these successful operations, Pulwama Police continued their ongoing drive against illegal mining, seizing two tippers used in the illicit extraction of materials.

The vehicles, bearing registration numbers JK01R-9135 and JK05C-5844, were seized by the Police Post Rahmoo, though the drivers managed to flee the scene. FIR No. 66/2024 has been registered, and efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits.

Meanwhile, the police have urged the people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
