SHOPIAN — A local Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed in a gunfight at Baskuchan village in Imamsahib area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday.

Quoting Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, the Kashmir Police Zone said that the killed militant has been identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Baskuchan area of Shopian, and has been linked with the LeT outfit.

He said that the slain was involved in several terror crimes and recently escaped from an encounter.

“Killed terrorist identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Baskuchan Shopian, linked with LeT terror outfit. Incriminating materials, arms & ammn including AK rifle recovered. He was involved in several terror crimes and recently escaped from an encounter: ADGP Kashmir,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

SRINAGAR — Militants have managed to give slip to security forces after a brief exchange of fire with the forces in Haripora area of Imamsahib in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

An official told KDC that a joint team of Police, Army's 44 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area on Wednesday evening.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, militants fired upon them which retaliated, triggering an encounter.

"After a brief exchange of fire, the cordon was extended to nearby areas and a search operation was started, however, nothing was found in the area," he added.

After conducting searches for several hours, nothing was found and the operation has been called off, the officer added.
