ANANTNAG — Anantnag Police have registered an FIR and picked up four persons for questioning following a stone-pelting incident during Isha prayers at Pehroo Sherbagh in Anantnag, after an altercation reportedly broke out over offering prayers at a house converted into a place of worship.

In a statement issued to the news agency JKNS, a police spokesperson said an altercation took place over the offering of prayers in the house. “Some miscreants pelted stones during Isha prayers, resulting in minor damage,” the statement said. Police said they reached the spot immediately and brought the situation under control.

Police advised citizens not to give any communal colour to the incident or share unverified information, and said the law and order situation was normal and under control.

In a further statement on Monday, Anantnag Police said the incident was under investigation and legal action was being taken in accordance with the law. They urged the public not to circulate unverified information or rumours, and cautioned people against donating money to anyone in connection with the incident.

Police also appealed to the public to maintain peace, communal harmony and brotherhood, and to allow the investigation to proceed unhindered.
