LEH — In a tragic incident in the high-altitude region of eastern Ladakh, two Indian Army personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, lost their lives while three others sustained injuries when a boulder fell onto their vehicle during a convoy movement near Charbagh, close to Durbuk in the Galwan sector, officials said on Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 11:30 AM during a routine training movement from Durbuk to Chongtash, roughly 200 kilometres from Leh. A massive boulder, dislodged from a cliff, came crashing down onto one of the Army’s SUVs, severely damaging the vehicle and injuring all five occupants onboard.
The Army identified the deceased as Lieutenant Colonel Bhanu Pratap Singh Mankotia and Lance Dafadar Daljit Singh of the 14 Sindh Horse regiment. The injured personnel include Major Mayank Shubham (14 Sindh Horse), Major Amit Dixit, and Captain Gaurav (60 Armoured Regiment), all of whom were immediately evacuated and are undergoing treatment.
“The vehicle was badly mangled under the weight and impact of the boulder,” an official said, adding that recovery operations were launched promptly in the challenging terrain.
Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, Army Commander Northern Command, and all ranks paid tributes to the deceased soldiers. “Northern Command stands firm with the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” the Army’s Northern Command stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Earlier, the Fire and Fury Corps, which oversees operations in Ladakh, had confirmed the incident, stating that a boulder from a cliff fell on one of the vehicles of a military convoy in Ladakh around 1130 hours on July 30, 2025. "Recovery action is in progress."
The remote and rugged region where the incident occurred is known for its treacherous terrain and weather-induced hazards. Military convoys moving through the high-altitude passes often face unpredictable natural challenges, especially during the monsoon season when landslides and rockfalls are frequent.
The mortal remains of the deceased are being transported with full military honours. The Army has initiated formal inquiries and administrative actions following the tragic loss.
