SRINAGAR — Three militants were killed in a gun battle with security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, the Indian Army said on Tuesday.
They said an operation was launched on specific intelligence of a Rashtriya Rifles Unit, about the presence of militants in the general area of Shoekal Keller.
“During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists,” the Army said.
In a post on X, Army's Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said, “On 13 May 2025, based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the general area of Shoekal Keller, the Indian Army launched a search and destroy operation. During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire, and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists.”
The Army said the operation is in progress, and the identities and the group affiliation of the slain could not be established immediately.
This is the first gun battle in Kashmir after the Pahalgam massacre in which 25 tourists and a local were killed.
Meanwhile, posters featuring the three militants involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack on tourists have been pasted in several districts of south Kashmir. The posters announce a reward for anyone who provides information leading to their arrest. The attackers remain at large.
