SRINAGAR — In a rare display of trust and support, residents of Eidgah constituency in Srinagar are providing monetary assistance to Independent candidate Imtiyaz Khan, encouraging him to launch a robust election campaign.

Khan, a former Congress district president who resigned under public pressure, is contesting against influential politicians like Mubarak Gul (NC) and Khurshid Aalam (PDP).

Khan expressed his gratitude for the support, stating, "People know that I worked for them and shared their happiness and sorrows. I am confident of my victory."

Khan emphasized that he is not backed by the BJP, contrary to the misconception that all Independent candidates are supported by the party. He stated, "I am here for the people and will never support the BJP."

He said he has spent the last decade serving the community, going door-to-door to ease their sufferings.

The locals' funding of Khan's campaign is a testament to his reputation and commitment to the people. Some donors have contributed as little as Rs 500, while others have deposited up to Rs 10,000 into his bank account. Khan humbly acknowledged the support, saying, "People know I am poor and can't afford election expenses. The real power is with the people, not money."

“He is known for his simplicity and honesty. We accompanied him to the Returning Officer's office to file nomination papers out of love,” said a couple of voters to the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

They added that this unusual display of support highlights the trust and faith the people have in Imtiyaz Khan.

As the election approaches, Khan's campaign is gaining momentum, fueled by the goodwill and generosity of the locals.

The polling for Srinagar has been scheduled for September 25.
