Srinagar: Paying tributes to Mohammad Maqbool Bhat on his 32nd death anniversary, Punjab based Dal Khalsa said Bhat sacrificed his life to “ensure that his people get freedom from Indian slavery”.
A statement issued by Dal Khalsa quoting its leader Kanwarpal Singh and Human Rights activist Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema said, “the Indian state hanged Bhat on this day in 1984 and set his soul free, which through multiple mouths was shouting for Kashmir’s Azaadi.”
Criticizing the Indian state for its “arrogant attitude towards struggling peoples and nationalities”, they said, “like in Afzal Guru case, the state has not returned the mortal remains of Janab Bhat also, thus depriving both the families of their right to perform last rites of their kin’s as per their faith and beliefs. This is worst kind of human rights violations.”
Praising Bhat’s mother Bibi Shahmala for sacrificing her four sons for Kashmir cause, they termed her as a ‘courageous lady’ to whom they met in Trehgam a few years ago.
“I had an opportunity to visit Bhat’s native village Trehgam along with Professor SAR Geelani from Delhi and Professor Jagmohan Singh from Ludhiana. We met Bhat’s mother and sister and other relatives. To my surprise, I found that his family members have preserved the house he lived in and also his other valuable belongings. For their own living, family had built a new house adjacent to the old one,” recollected Kanwar Pal Singh, “we admire her dedication, spirit and affection towards the martyrs of faith, because it’s rare to see.”
