KU suspends class work to contain protests

Srinagar: After the fresh spate of protests in the campus, Kashmir University students have been asked to vacate the University hostels. The move comes after the administration failed to contain the protests in the campus over a student's arrest by J&K police. The police claims that the student, Muzamil Farooq Dar from Kakapora Pulwama, has militant links. However, Kashmir University Students Union contests the claim, saying that the student is being framed and is being harassed for taking part in KUSU's protest against celebration of Yoga Day in Kashmir.

The row started on 22nd of this month when Muzamil was picked up by joint forces of police and SOG. Students reacted with protest demonstrations in the campus since 23rd of June.

On Thursday, Muzamil’s classmates talked to Vice Chancellor of the University. However, VC failed to convince the students about his release.

While the students continued protesting, police fired in the air and started lathi-charge. Students were chased away before they reacted with pelting stones on policemen and the VC office.

Meanwhile, the University has suspended class work in its main campus until June 27 in order to avoid any more protests in the campus.
