Srinagar: The tourism ministry in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to launch a new campaign to attract tourists after the industry saw a downfall following devastating floods in the region.
State’s tourism minister, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, said that the floods have badly affected the industry, as tourists were ‘unwilling’ to visit Kashmir fearing post-flood epidemic. He said the inflow of tourists has significantly decreased in the State.
Mir said the new campaign would help to attract more and more tourists towards Kashmir valley. “We are still hopeful of a good season and surely the tourists will return to Kashmir,” a local news agency quoted him as having said.
Mir contested the rumours of possible epidemic saying it is ‘out of question’ due to low temperatures. “The Ministry has asked the Health Department to issue health advisory after proper observation, so that tourists start visiting Kashmir Valley,” he said.
Moreover, he said that some of the tourist spots would be thrown open after upcoming Eid. They include famous places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam.
He informed that the Jammu and Kashmir government was planning to seek a slew of concessions from the Centre, including income tax exemptions and interest-free loans for tourism sector that has suffered heavy losses due to the floods.
