Handwara: An army soldier was killed on Monday when suspected militants attacked a patrolling party near Wadarbala forest area of Handwara area of frontier district Kupwara.
Defense sources said that a group of militants attacked a patrolling party of 21 RR near Wadarbala forest area during morning hours. “The Army jawans retaliated with same force while the exchange of fire continued for an hour,” an official said.
Sources said that soon after the firing, reinforcement comprised of 30, 32, 6 RR, CRPF and SOG Handwara was called in, who cordoned off the area to trace the militants. “The exchange of fire resulted in the death of a soldier while another was injured,” an official said. Army sources identified the deceased soldier as Gunner Gursahib Singh of 30 RR, 171 Medium Regiment.
Defence sources added that at least two militants were present in the forest and a hunt has been launched to nab them. “The operation is still in progress, however, the exchange of fire has halted,” sources said.
