New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday formed a 5-member committee headed by Sr Registrar of Jammu and Kashmir High Court to evaluate the ground situation in the flood-ravaged state.
The apex court directed the committee to file its report within two weeks before it and also before J&K High Court.
While appearing before the SC bench headed by CJI RM Lodha, the J&K government's counsel assure the top court that drinking water would be made available to all flood-affected people within three days.
During the earlier hearing, the Supreme Court said "a calamity and disaster" as huge as the one witnessed in J&K floods "deserves national response".
The Omar Abdullah government yesterday exempted, from entry tax, the relief material brought here from outside the state for free distribution among flood victims.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has assured the Omar government of providing support to reconstruct the health infrastructure which was damaged due to the floods.
The health ministry has supplied 150 metric tonnes of medicines, 35 lakh chlorine tablets, 50,000 IV fluids (DNS), 50,000 dextrose, 50,000 Ringer Lactate, 50,000 normal saline and 2,70,000 Oral Rehydration Solution sachets.
The Army and Air Force have so far rescued more than 280,000 people who were marooned due to unprecedented floods in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
