Srinagar: Kashmir University has received more than 40 nominations for the post of Vice Chancellor.
In the last week of June this year, the varsity authorities had invited nominations for the post with a 20-day deadline for submission of the applications. Professors with an experience of more than 10 years were eligible to submit their nominations.
The last date for submission of nomination was July 17 and all the nominations were collected by Registrar of the university. “Earlier the number of nominations was 34 but on the closing day the number went up to more than 40,” officials said.
Sources said local and national level professors have applied for the post but no application has been received from international level.
All these nominations would be examined by Searching Committee in coming days.
The search panel is headed by Prof Goverdhan Mehta, National Research Professor at the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, besides two other members, both former VCs. The panel was constituted by Raj Bhawan, the Chancellor’s office for State Universities last month.
The committee was constituted a month after former Vice Chancellor, Prof Talat Ahmad joined Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. Talat opted to join Jamia Millia Islamia despite being granted three-year extension, three months prior to the completion of his first term which was due to end in June 2014.
Registrar, Prof Zaffar Ahmad Reshi confirmed to have received more than 40 nominations for the post of Vice Chancellor. “I didn’t count them but they are more than 40,” he said.
He ruled out any further role and said his job was just to collect the nominations and submit them before the search committee.
“I was supposed to collect CVs and my role ends here. I will place these nominations before the search committee for examination,” Prof Reshi said.
The Registrar said he will submit nominations before the search committee on August 2. “They are expected to visit this place on July 31, but another meeting would be held at Delhi on August 2 where the search committee will examine the nominations,” he said.
Prof A M Shah is the interim vice chancellor of the university. Shah assumed the charge soon after Talat joined Jamia Millia in Delhi.
Meanwhile, Kashmir University Teachers Association (KUTA) has reiterated their demand for appointment of a local person as Vice Chancellor. “We have a reason for that because our own people don’t lack the talent,” President KUTA, Dr Salahuddin Tak said.
“The outsiders after being appointed as VC for tenure of three years take first six months to understand the system and in last six months they are in a hurry to go while the local VC can start working from day one,” Tak said.
He said the local VC will be more concerned about improvement of overall educational system besides addressing other issues.
