Srinagar: Kashmir Valley observed a shutdown amid tight security on Thursday. Chairman of Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani had asked people to observe a shutdown on India's 63rd R-Day. Heavy security was deployed across Srinagar and other major towns in the state to foil any attempt to disturb the R-Day function held at the Bakshi Stadium here. Hundreds of police and paramilitary CRPF men were deployed in different parts of the city to thwart protests. Mobile service operators blocked services for a few hours. Vehicle movement was also restrictive, while most shops remained closed. Force personnel in full battle gear patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar city, whilst sharpshooters watched from rooftops.
