Srinagar, Dec 7: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani has asked people to stage peaceful protest on December 9, after Friday prayers against the proposal of National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah to reopen liquor shops and cinema halls in the Valley.
“People should stage peaceful protests to put across a loud and clear message to the rulers that they will not allow this evil (liquor) to find any place in Kashmir,” Geelani said in a statement.
He urged Imams of Masjids to educate people through Friday sermons about ill and harmful effects of liquor on the personal, social and moral life of human beings and its prohibition in Islam.“Imams should also mobilize public opinion for imposition of ban on the sale and purchase of liquor in Kashmir,” he said.
Geelani alleged that New Delhi had been utilizing the services of its pawns to launch a cultural aggression on people of Kashmir since 1947. “NC leadership has been in the vanguard of New Delhi’s political and cultural aggression against people of Kashmir to gain and retain power. It has made it a point to spread the menace of drinking and moral waywardness among the youth,” he said.
Geelani said that the people would continue to stage peaceful protests until the blanket ban was imposed on the sale and purchase of liquor in Kashmir.
