The much anticipated low cost Android tablet, Aakash, which will be priced at Rs 3,000, will not be launched this year.
A spokesperson of DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, said to The Mobile Indian, "An improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end."
The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. The spokesperson said, "The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing."
The upgraded version of Aakash powered by Android 2.2 will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor with graphics accelerator and HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory.
Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.
Suneet Singh Tuli, chief executive officer of DataWind, had earlier said to The Mobile Indian, "Products from Samsung and Apple are for the elite class and we cannot match them at the price we are offering. We are making good quality products in India for Indians at an affordable price."
On future course of action, he had said, "We have not set a timeframe for future launches but we are working on 9 and 10 inch Android tablets. They will have capacitive touchscreens and we will try to keep them under Rs 5,000."
