Srinagar: Taking a serious note of a membership drive kick-started by Youth Congress at the University of Kashmir, the varsity authorities have decided to communicate to the party “to not repeat the activity again.”
Talking to Greater Kashmir, the KU Registrar Prof S Fayyaz Ahmad said the membership drive has been carried out without their information. “We came to know about it through newspapers. We will not allow any such activity in the university. We are communicating to the Congress party not to start the activity again in the campus,” he said.
On Saturday Congress workers had turned up in the varsity luring students into the party fold. The workers were seen convincing students that they will facilitate their interaction with the AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is scheduled to arrive here on Monday.
Asked how they managed to enter the varsity despite the presence of security personnel there, Prof Fayyaz said: “It was a small gathering of people and they ran their activity without any banner. Had they (congress workers) carried any banner along, we would have been able to trace them. Obviously small number of people interacted with students. Hundreds of people come to the varsity everyday. So it was not possible to stop them. However in future we will prevent such incidents.”
However Congress Lok Sabha returning officer Naseem Khan said: “We had informed the varsity officials about our activity. We had a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar before holding the event. We even provided them feedback about our membership drive. We had got proper permission for our activity.”
Meanwhile Kashmir University Students Association has appealed the students to stay away from the membership drive.
