Srinagar: Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Thursday announced to step-up the campaign against hanging of Parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru, day after state Assembly stalled the resolution seeking clemency for the convict.
To begin with, Malik said, they would hold afternoon protests in Lal Chowk here on Friday against the capital punishment to Guru.
“An atmosphere is being created for sending Afzal Guru to gallows. We will revive our campaign against his hanging,” Malik told a hurriedly called press conference here.
He said the entire JKLF leadership will hold protests in Lal Chowk on Friday afternoon against Guru’s capital punishment and the “high drama” in the state Assembly Wednesday which resulted in lapsing of the clemency resolution.
At the same time Malik appealed to political parties and Government of India to understand the sensitiveness involved in the issue.
“Government of India will be setting Kashmir on fire if Afzal Guru is hanged. They hanged the founder of freedom struggle, Shaheed Maqbool Bhat. The result was that Kashmiris took up the gun and Bhat was reborn in every home,” Malik said. The JKLF chairman has in the past held protests in and outside the state against capital punishment to Guru.
“I appeal to them not to force Kashmir youth to take up gun again. Do not dishonour the transition shown by Kashmiris from violent to non-violent movement,” Malik said.
“The charge-sheet filed in the Parliament attack case mentions it clearly that Afzal Guru was not involved in conspiracy or execution of the attack. But he only provided logistic support. Do they want to hang Afzal Guru for electoral gains?” Malik asked.
On stalling of the clemency resolution on Guru in the state Assembly yesterday, Malik alleged that political parties including National Conference, Congress, BJP, PDP, NPP and others were directed by their bosses from New Delhi not to allow the resolution. Malik alleged that the state Assembly has been time and again used against the interests of Kashmiris.
“Whether it was extending the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or other draconian laws or killing of Kashmiris, the Assembly has being used for it,” Malik alleged.
“These so called parties are the employees of their lords in New Delhi. The drama was enacted in the Speaker’s chamber at a meeting to stall the resolution,” Malik alleged. “While NC and PDP, the two big employees, were directed to remain unconscious during the proceedings, BJP and Congress were asked to fight on non-issues. It was hypocrisy by the so called representatives of people. It was a match fixing involving all members and parties and their role was finalized in the Speaker’s chamber,” Malik said. These parties, Malik alleged, maintained “criminal silence” in the state Assembly, saying they had adopted same position when Maqbool Bhat was hanged.
He alleged that members of the State Assembly proved Wednesday that they are the ‘employees of the agencies and not representatives of the people.’
Police Raids Maisuma Residence:
Barely a few hours after the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front threatened to revive Save Afzal Guru campaign, a police party raided his Maisuma residence here on late Thursday evening, sources said.
“Malik was not present in the house at the time of the raid,”they added.
