Srinagar: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday reacted sharply to the statement of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir S M Sahai that nobody would be allowed to carry out “anti-national activities” in Jammu and Kashmir.
“He (Sahai) should understand that Kashmir is not Uttar Pradesh where he can talk about the law and order situation in the language of a policeman. Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory, where Sahai has been posted out of his luck or bad luck. There is a history to Jammu and Kashmir, according to which India has no legal or moral right over this region,” Geelani said in a statement.
The veteran leader while referring to his house arrest and “curfew like situation” in Shopian, where he was supposed to address a rally today said, “Government has accepted defeat. New Delhi has always failed to suppress our spirit and will never be able to weaken our resolve.”
He condemned the invocation of PSA against Tehreek-e-Hurriyat General Secretary Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai and denial of Dr Muhammad Shafi alias Shariati’s interview to his family in jail. He alleged that the Jammu Kashmir had been turned into virtual police state.
POLICE THWART RALLY
Heavy contingent of police was deployed in south Kashmir’s Shopian town on Friday to thwart the public rally scheduled to be addressed by Hurriyat (G) chairman. Report said policemen were seen manning the important entry points in the area.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Shafaqat Watali said “People of Shopian did not pay any attention to the call of separatists.”
Addressing media men, the DIG said, “People carried out their normal business despite call for a dharna announced by the separatists. The economy and other sectors have already suffered a lot due to agitations,” he added.
