RAMBAN — The authorities have ordered the suspension of vehicular traffic on both sides of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in order to carry out repair and maintenance works in Dhalwas area of Ramban district.

According to an order, as per the news agency KNO, the traffic on National Highway-44 is closed as of now for restoration works at Dhalwas.

The order reads that the critical stretch at Dhalwas has become narrow, following incessant rains and slides.

“People and passengers are being informed about the status of National Highway-44 through various social media platforms,” it added.

SRINAGAR — The Jammu-Srinagar national highway has been closed for vehicular traffic due to shooting stones on the road stretch between Ramban and Banihal, officials said on Wednesday.

A Traffic official quoted by the news agency KDC said that mudslides and shooting stones have been reported from various stretches between Ramban and Banihal. "National Highway is closed till further clearance," he said.

The highway is the lifeline of the landlocked valley and the main road link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.

UDHAMPUR — A truck carrying livestock to Kashmir met with an accident on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, leading to the death of 76 sheep. 14 sheep sustained injuries in the accident.

While divulging information about the mishap, a member of the ‘All Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association’ told the news agency KNT that the livestock truck was on its way to Valley when it met with an accident near Domail Udhampur. He said out of 100 sheep, 76 died on the spot and 24 suffered injuries.

He said the truck (HP63-E4737B) driven by one Sansar Singh, son of Jarnail Singh went out of his control and fell into a deep gorge. “The driver, conductor and one more person on board were injured in the mishap,” he said.

The livestock belonged to three persons Shabir Ahmed from Soura, Shabir Ahmed from Bandipora and Parvez Ahmed from Tral. The police confirmed the incident, saying the trio on board including the driver are stable.

SRINAGAR — The Srinagar-Jammu highway was thrown open for vehicular movement on Saturday morning with traffic allowed to ply from both sides, officials said.

An official said that the NHW, which was closed for maintenance work, has now been reopened for traffic from both sides.

“Despite the inconvenience, the maintenance work was essential to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the highway. People are advised to maintain lane discipline to avoid congestion,” the official said.

JAMMU — Jammu-Srinagar Highway shall remain closed on Friday for repair and maintenance of critical spots.

Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mussarat Zia informed the news agency KNO that traffic will not ply on the highway.

“Remember, it is Dry Day ('No Traffic Day') on National Highway-44 tomorrow on March 03, 2023,” the DC tweeted.

Earlier, the government conveyed that there will be no traffic on the highway for three days (Fridays) including February 24, March 3 and March 10 for repair maintenance of critical spots on NH-44.

A Traffic department official said that people are advised not to undertake any journey on the highway till the restoration work is completed.

SRINAGAR — A day after remaining cut off from the outside world, Kashmir’s aerial and surface links were restored on Saturday as flight operations resumed at Srinagar International airport and Jammu-Srinagar Highway reopened for traffic.

Director, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar Airport, Kuldeep Singh, spoke to the news agency GNS and said that snow was cleared from the runway and apron early in the morning. “Flight services have resumed. The first flight arrives by noon,” he said.

Asked about the number of flights expected to operate during the day, he said, “We are looking forward to having a maximum number of flights today.”

Following snowfall on Friday, most of the flights to and fro Srinagar were cancelled and the airport authorities have already announced passengers of the cancelled flights would be accommodated by the respective airlines in the next available flight “at no extra cost.”

Meanwhile, traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, reopened and according to the officials, light motor vehicles have been released from both ends of the thoroughfare. The strategic highway was closed mainly due to shooting stones and mudslides near Mahar in Ramban district.

Mughal road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian, as well as the Srinagar-Leh highway have been already closed for this winter.

The Mughal road has been closed for vehicular movement vide District Magistrate Shopian's order from January 5 in view of snow accumulation.

Also, the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for vehicular movement vide Divisional Commissioner Ladakh UT's Order (No. 75) on January 6 in view of snow accumulation.

SRINAGAR — Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, received its first snowfall of the season while the other parts of the Valley including higher reaches as well as plains also experienced fresh snowfall on Friday, leading to the suspension of flight operations to and from Srinagar International Airport.

Director of Srinagar International Airport, Kuldeep Singh, while speaking to the news agency KNO, said that a total of 66 flight operations including 33 departures and 33 arrivals were cancelled due to continuous snowfall and low visibility.

He added that only four flight operations including AirAsia I5 709/710, GoFirst G8 259/260, Indigo 6E 6022/6163 and Indigo 6E 2981/2982 could operate today following which all the flight operations scheduled for a day were cancelled due to low visibility. He said that the decision about tomorrow’s flight operations will be taken accordingly.

Most parts of the Valley including Srinagar recorded fresh snowfall today, the officials in the Meteorological department said, adding that the weather would remain mainly dry across Jammu and Kashmir from January 14-January 18 following which back-to-back Western Disturbances would affect J&K again from January 19.

“The weather would remain mostly cloudy from January 19 while there is a possibility of light to moderate snowfall at most parts of Kashmir on January 23,” Deputy Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, informed.

The MeT officials said that Srinagar received a snowfall of 7 cm till 6:30 PM while Pahalgam and Gulmarg received a snowfall of 29.7 cm and 15 cm respectively. A snowfall of 25 cm was recorded at Qazigund while Kupwara recorded 0.5 cm of snow till 6:30 PM today.

Moreover, the inclement weather conditions also affected the electricity in some places including south and central Kashmir areas.

“There are some outages but during the ongoing snowfall, there has been no major outage anywhere. We have already pressed our men and machinery into the services and the electricity at these places is being restored in a short span of time,” Chief Engineer, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar said.

Furthermore, Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for vehicular movement today following the slippery condition of the road after fresh snowfall. “Traffic movement has been stopped on Jammu-Srinagar NHW from both ends in view of continuous snowing in Nowgam Banihal Sector, which lead to the intermittent shooting stones and mudslide at Mehar Ramban.”

Officials said that the men and machinery have already been pressed into service to clear the road.

The other major roads including Srinagar-Leh and Mughal Road continued to remain closed today. Besides, train services also remained suspended today.

Moreover, Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority has issued an avalanche warning in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of heavy snowfall since morning.

According to a communication, an avalanche with a high danger level is likely to occur above 2000 metres in Bandipora and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours.

“Avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2000 metres over Baramulla and Ganderbal districts and avalanche with low danger level is likely to occur above 2000 metres over Anantnag, Doda, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Poonch and Ramban districts in the next 24 hours,” the communication reads.

It also advised people living in these areas to take precautions and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas.

In view of inclement weather, police established Emergency Helpdesk Control Rooms for the general public in order to facilitate them in case of any untoward incident or distress. For any emergency or exigency, the general public can also dial 112.

QAZIGUND — Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for the second consecutive day on Wednesday after heavy rains triggered landslides and shooting stones, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded at various places on the route, officials said.

"Highway is closed. There have been several landslides, shooting stone incidents triggered by rains at various places in Banihal-Ramban section of highway," a traffic police official said.

The highway was closed for traffic due to shooting stones at Panthiyal on Tuesday. "As a result, hundreds of vehicles are stranded at different points on the highway," he said.

The official added that the situation at Battery Cheshma on the highway is bad as a lot of mud is to be cleared to ensure that heavy vehicles stuck there are cleared.

"Men and machinery have been deployed to clear the area for the traffic," officials said.
