PULWAMA — At least 31 sheep died after consuming toxic water in Muchpona village of south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Sunday.

The unfortunate incident took place on Sunday afternoon and immediately, a team of district veterinary doctors rushed to the spot and started treating the animals. At least 31 sheep died, while a few took ill and were being treated.

The sheep, belonging to a flock of 47, were owned by two farmers — Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir and Bashir Ahmad Rather — from Muchpona village.

Bashir Ahmad, one of the owners, told The Kashmir Pulse that the flock drank water in the afternoon and collapsed soon after. "We immediately sought help from the local animal husbandry department. The doctors tried to treat the animals but the majority of the sheep had succumbed," he added.

The farmers have suffered a loss of over five lakh rupees due to the unfortunate incident. "We have suffered a loss of at least seven lakh rupees as each sheep in the flock could sell for 25,000 rupees at least," Bashir Ahmad rued.

Imtiyaz Ahmad's father, Abdul Ahad Mir, said that the flock drank water in a local stream of water, which was contaminated. "As a result of the contaminated water, we lost over 30 sheep and many more are ill," he stated.

The owners of the flock have appealed to the local Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department and Deputy Commissioner Pulwama to intervene and help them get sufficient compensation in this connection.

SRINAGAR — Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), an infectious viral disease of cattle continues to infect more cattle due to which the farmers are very much worried.

The residents of Chotigam Shopian told the news agency KNO that around 35 cows have been affected in the last three days and two have already died but no official has visited the area. They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that cattle can be treated on time.

Farmers said that though the mortality rate of LSD is not so high, animals infected with this disease are unable to produce enough milk even after they are cured of infection and their economy is getting badly affected.

They said that there are lakhs of families whose livelihood is dependent on cattle rearing and other related work but this disease has badly affected them. Farmers said that some of them have lost their cattle on which they were dependent and the government must look into it and compensate.

Meanwhile, an official of the Animal Husbandry Department Shopian said that almost every village of the district is affected due to the disease and due to staff shortage, it is impossible to reach every farmer. He said that they are working day and night to reach everyone.

On the other hand, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Shopian Altaf Hussian Masoodi told KNO that over 250 cattle have been affected due to the disease in the district so far and among them 20 have died. He said that a team will be deputed to Chotigam area on Saturday.

It is in place to mention here that officials said that there is neither evidence of the transmission of the disease in humans nor it has any effect on milk. It is a viral disease and after boiling it (milk), it can be used.

Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral skin disease transmitted by vectors affecting cattle and buffaloes only. "This disease is not transmitted from animals to humans," they said.

It is a viral disease of cattle and buffalo spread through the bite of mosquitoes or parasites. “The disease affects skin of the infected animal through creating large size lesion on body, the locals said, adding that the consumption of animal’s meat or milk does not transmit the infection to humans.

PULWAMA — Scores of employees posted at offices and veterinaries for decades without any transfer have hit the work culture of the Animal Husbandry Department in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The department has not transferred these Assistants and Clerks from decades in the district, resulting in nepotism and bad work culture.

Reliable sources said that a Junior Assistant is posted at Chief Animal Husbandry Office in Pulwama for the last 10 years without being transferred to any other location.

They said that a Junior Assistant is posted at Chief Animal Husbandry Office, Pulwama since his appointment in 2012 and given the fact he has not been transferred even once, the said employee has started treating the office as his fiefdom.

"He is only shifting his pay from one Section to another to give the impression that he is transferred, but is working in the same office since his joining date," sources said.

Sources added that there are dozens of other employees who have been posted at a single location since their appointment.

"A major reshuffle of these employees is needed to save the department from further deterioration and bring back work culture to save animals and for better delivery of service in the sector," they said.

Senior officials said that the department at the Directorate level is planning to transfer these employees who have prolonged stays to restore the work culture in the Pulwama district.
