PULWAMA — In southern Kashmir's Pulwama district lies the Government Degree College for Women Pulwama (GDC Women Pulwama), where the tranquility of academia is now disrupted by the unrest among its contractual lecturers.

The contractual lecturers of this institution find themselves embroiled in a struggle for fair compensation and the assurance of regular classwork. The recent decision by the J&K Higher Education Department to slash the remuneration of these educators has sparked outrage and concern, leading to a vociferous demand for justice.

Initially receiving a monthly salary of Rs 28,000, the contractual lecturers had been advocating for a raise to match their counterparts in other states, who enjoy salaries up to Rs 50,000. However, their hopes were dashed when a new policy decreed a paltry Rs 400 per lecture and called them 'guest faculty', limiting their potential earnings to a mere Rs 12,000 to 15,000 per month.

The circular issued by the J&K Higher Education Department on February 1, 2024, stipulated that guest faculty would be compensated at the rate of Rs 400 per lecture. This decision, seen as unjust by many, has left the guest lecturers grappling with financial insecurity and uncertainty about their future.

The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 in Jammu and Kashmir aimed to synchronize the academic calendar with national standards. This move, while lauded for its efforts to streamline education, has inadvertently exacerbated the plight of guest lecturers.

One of the central issues highlighted by the aggrieved teachers is the disruption in classwork, particularly on Fridays. Dr Mohammad Yousuf Nengroo, a senior guest lecturer at GDC Women Pulwama, lamented the unofficial holiday observed due to low student attendance on Fridays. This absence of classwork translates to a direct loss of income for the guest lecturers, further exacerbating their financial woes.

Dr Nengroo, along with his colleagues, who are highly qualified with PhDs and NET qualifications, demand urgent action to address their concerns. They advocate for the resumption of regular classwork on Fridays to ensure equitable compensation and uphold the integrity of academic engagement.

However, when approached for comment, Principal Yasmeen Farooq refuted claims of disrupted classwork on Fridays. She asserted that classes are conducted as scheduled, including on Fridays. Nevertheless, she pledged to investigate the matter and ensure the uninterrupted continuation of classwork to alleviate the grievances of the guest lecturers.

As the debate rages on, the fate of contractual or guest lecturers hangs in the balance, symbolizing the broader challenges facing education in Jammu and Kashmir. With stakeholders on both sides of the divide, the resolution of this issue remains a pressing concern, impacting not only the livelihoods of educators but also the quality of education imparted to students.

PULWAMA — In a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and local youth activists, a program titled "Nurturing Capsule for Shaping Children Below 10 Years" was organized today at Government Degree College for Women Pulwama.

The event, held under the theme "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams," aimed to foster the talents and aspirations of young children in Pulwama district.

Among the distinguished attendees were CO of 55RR, Davin Sood; Major of 55RR, Abishek Reqiwal; Sanjeev Ratu from 2YC CRPF; SSP Pulwama PD Nitya; ACD Pulwama, Dr Peerzada Farhat; Tehsildar Pulwama Mohammad Iqbal; Assistant Labour Commissioner Pulwama, Hafsa Qayoom; DYSSO Pulwama, ZEO Pulwama, along with other senior officers from various departments of the district.

Hundreds of children under the age of 10 from different schools across Pulwama participated in the program, which encompassed various activities geared towards nurturing their skills and potential in diverse fields, according to organizers.

The event commenced with a lively painting competition on the college lawns, with participants showcasing their artistic flair. Subsequently, outstanding performers were recognized and awarded during the proceedings.

Following this, a career counselling session was conducted, featuring insights from officers representing the army, police, and civil departments. They shared personal anecdotes and professional journeys, aiming to inspire and guide the young participants towards realizing their career aspirations.

Expressing gratitude, the participating students hailed the Indian Army for spearheading such initiatives aimed at nurturing their potential. They expressed hopes for the continuity of such programs in the future.

PULWAMA — In a celebration of literature, culture, and the indomitable spirit of Kashmir, Government Degree College for Women Pulwama played host to a momentous book launch event. The stage was set for the unveiling of "Perplexed Thoughts - Tales from Kashmir," a highly-anticipated anthology, marking a significant milestone for The Kashmir Pulse, a prominent news platform in the region.

Themed "Read, Write and Recreate," the event was a collaboration between The Kashmir Pulse and the college's Department of English, fostering a creative dialogue between aspiring writers and seasoned authors. The event saw the participation of distinguished personalities, including Dr. Tanvir Hayat, a prominent educationist, Mr. Sarfaraz Ahmad, State Taxation Officer, Mrs. Saima Jamal, an esteemed author, Dr. Yasmeen Farooq, Principal of Government Degree College Pulwama, and Mr. Showkat Rafiq Wani, the SP Headquarter Pulwama.

Dr. Iram Shafi delivered the inaugural speech, setting the stage for an inspiring literary journey. Professor Hina Fayaz expressed her gratitude in the "Vote of Thanks," and Sakeena Jabeen did an impeccable job as the event's anchor.

The SP Headquarter, Mr. Showkat Rafiq Wani, specifically lauded The Kashmir Pulse team, including its Editor, Aasif Ganaie, and contributing author Sakeena Jabeen, for their significant contributions to various literary and awareness programs.

After the launch event, Aasif Ganaie, the Editor of The Kashmir Pulse, spoke passionately about "Perplexed Thoughts," emphasizing that the anthology is a collective effort from over 30 authors. He described the book as a captivating journey that immerses readers in the multifaceted aspects of Kashmir, offering insights from both natives and visitors. The book is a testament to the region's diverse perspectives, with contributions from both locals and individuals from outside Jammu and Kashmir.

The launch of "Perplexed Thoughts - Tales from Kashmir" was more than just an event; it was a celebration of the written word, an appreciation of the region's rich literary heritage, and a promise of the bright future awaiting the literary talents of Kashmir. PULWAMA — In an effort to combat the escalating drug problem, Mashek NGO and Fitness 99 Gym, in collaboration with Government Women's College Pulwama, spearheaded the inspiring "Run for Drug-Free Pulwama" race. The event took place on Friday morning, stretching from Government Women's College Pulwama to New Bus Stand Drussu Pulwama, garnering substantial participation from over 200 individuals, predominantly youth.

The main force behind organizing the race against the burgeoning drug menace was Bhat Musaddiq Reyaz, a young social activist and District President of Mashek NGO. Recognizing the urgent need to provide a platform for athletes and promote sportsmanship, the race aimed to raise awareness about the alarming rise in drug abuse cases within society.

The race, officially flagged off by DySP headquarters Pulwama, Showkat Ahmad Wani, concluded with a powerful statement of unity and determination. Abid Hussain Mir of Achgoza village triumphantly claimed the first position, with Yawer Reshi of Ratnipora securing second place and Nadeem Ahmad from Sonsamil village clinching third place. As a token of appreciation for their achievements, the top three winners were awarded cash prizes of five thousand, three thousand, and two thousand respectively.

Following the race, a special felicitation ceremony was held near New Bus Stand Pulwama, where all participants were honoured with certificates. Distinguished guests in attendance included ACR Pulwama, Aijaz Ahmad; ASP Pulwama, Tanveer Ahmad Wani; DySP Headquarter, Showkat Ahmad Wani; SHO Pulwama, Azim Khan; Chairman of Municipal Council Pulwama, Bilal Ahmad Rather, and Nodal Officer Tobacco Free Kashmir at Directorate of Health & Services, Dr Mir Mushtaq.

The felicitation ceremony was gracefully hosted by Dr Rouf ur Rafiq, a renowned sports promoter and social activist.

Bhat Musaddiq Reyaz expressed his determination and commitment, saying, "Our goal with the 'Run for Drug-Free Pulwama' race was to create a platform that not only promotes sports but also raises awareness about the pressing issue of drug abuse. By uniting the youth and encouraging their active participation, we believe we can inspire positive change and build a drug-free future for Pulwama."

Through initiatives like these, the organizers aim to inspire a brighter and drug-free future for Pulwama and its residents.

PULWAMA — In order to aware the general public about legal aspects of the rights of women, crime against women, sexual assault, physical, mental harassment and female feticide, Pulwama Police organized an awareness seminar on 'Crimes Against Women' in collaboration with The Kashmir Pulse and NSS wing at Government Degree College Women’s Pulwama.

The event was presided over by Showkat Rafiq Wani, DySP Hqrs Pulwama. SHO Pulwama; Principal of the college, Dr Yasmeena Farooq; Advocate Manzoor-ul-Haq Wani; Chairperson of Ansaar-ul-Masakeen Kakapora, Aafiqa Ali were also present in the seminar.

During the programme, DySP Hqrs Pulwama delivered an elaborate lecture on the topic of sexual harassment at workplaces, domestic violence, human trafficking etc. He said that women have been victims of humiliation, exploitation and torture by men on different counts and rapes and brutal murders have been so common nowadays.

Mr Showkat Rafiq Wani made the girl participants (students) aware of the provisions of the law for the protection of women. He advised them to come forward with their grievances instead of becoming victims of bad characters. He assured them that police is committed to the protection of the general public, particularly women folk.

Lectures were also delivered by other police and civil officers in which participants were made aware of the rights of women in society. The participants were asked to encourage the victims to report in their respective jurisdictions.

Detailed awareness about laws and provisions relating to the abuse of women, foeticide and infanticide was also imparted to the participants. In addition, it was brought to their notice that Pulwama Police has recently set up a Women’s Cell in Pulwama that can be approached for any kind of assistance. The participants were assured that the identity of the victim would be kept confidential.

Besides, the participants were also made aware of the JKeCOP application launched by J&K Police to get emergency services including lodging an FIR at the click of a button. They were requested to download the application from the Google Play Store for almost all police-related issues like lodging complaints (FIR), viewing an FIR, giving information, reporting traffic violations, seeking emergency help, etc.

PULWAMA — On the eve of National Sports Day, being celebrated to pay tribute to Hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, different functions were on Monday organized by the Youth Services and Sports (YS&S) Department in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

Director, Youth Services and Sports, J&K, Subhash Chander Chibber inaugurated the Inter-District Provincial Level Volleyball tournament for U-19 girls at Government Women's Degree College Pulwama in presence of ADC Pulwama, Joint Director YS&S, Kashmir and other dignitaries.

The tournament is being conducted by DYS&SO Pulwama following the successful culmination of the boys league competition in the same discipline.

Earlier, the Director along with other officers visited the famous MMBHSS Pulwama and inaugurated a hockey match between YSS Pulwama and Hockey Pulwama played on newly constructed hockey turf.

On the occasion, he interacted with players and advised them to opt for sports as a career and use leisure time in games to abstain from drugs and anti-social activities.

He hailed DYS&SO for tireless efforts in organizing such programmes successfully and appreciated the overwhelming participation of students in the sports.

The Director assured participants and officials of the department of full support to scale new heights.
