SRINAGAR — An unknown person jumped into Dal Lake in front of Nishat Garden in central Kashmir's Srinagar district on Thursday.

An official quoted by the local news agency Kashmir Scroll said that an unknown person jumped into Dal Lake in front of Nishat Garden.

He said that the rescue operation was started soon after the incident and later a body was recovered.

Meanwhile, identification of the dead body is being ascertained and further investigation has been taken up.

SRINAGAR — The famed Nadru production in Kashmir is witnessing a decline, with growers attributing it to water pollution stemming from drains flowing into water bodies.

Those associated with the business informed the news agency KNO that widespread pollution and the deterioration of water quality have significantly impacted Nadru production across various water bodies.

Growers said that each passing year sees a further decrease in production as the water quality is worsening due to heightened pollution levels.

Mohammad Maqbool, 60, a seasoned Nadru grower from Sangam Srinagar, expressed concern over the continuous decline in production over the past 16-18 years. “Both the public and the government are responsible for this negligence,” he said.

He said that drains constantly discharge into water bodies, contaminating the water and contributing to the decline in Nadru production. “Water bodies such as Dal Lake are the source of livelihood for thousands of families, and Nadru has faced a sharp decline in production since the devastating floods of 2014. We used to harvest hundreds of kilograms of Nadru from the lake before the floods. Since then, we have been struggling,” he said.

The grower said the production has continued to decline over the past few years due to rampant pollution, degrading water quality, and encroachments in the lake. He expressed apprehension that Nadru faces the risk of disappearing from the lake entirely unless substantial measures are taken to restore the water bodies.

Growers also expressed concern over the dilapidated condition of available boats – required to extract Nadru from water bodies – and the unavailability of deodar timber for (boat) repairs, which add to their challenges.

Other cultivators highlighted the impact of excessive water levels, due to which lotus stems remain submerged for extended periods, which weakens the plants and reduces yields.

Deteriorating water quality in Dal Lake and other water bodies, a result of both excess water and pollution, has exposed Nadru plants to diseases and fungal growth, rendering them unsuitable for consumption, they said.

SRINAGAR — In an unfortunate incident, a teenage boy drowned to death in Dal Lake Srinagar on Sunday.

As per the reports reaching here, a teenage boy identified as Wahid Fayaz, a resident of Bemina, drowned in Dal Lake while he was having a bath.

Sources said that his body was later retrieved by locals along with the help of River Police Srinagar from Dal Lake near Ghat number 16.

Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident and the body was handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities.

SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), during the ongoing cleaning of Dal Lake on Thursday, discovered a rare kind of fish for the first time, which is said to be an alligator gar fish.

Known for its crocodile-like head and razor-sharp teeth, alligator gar fish is native to North America.

Masood Ahmad, an expert from J&K LCMA’s Research and Monitoring department told the news agency KNO, said that they are going to conduct the analysis of the discovered fish with the help of fisheries and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology - Kashmir (SKUAST-K)’s Fisheries Department.

“We are going to seek help from the Fisheries Department and SKUAST-K so as to find out the effects of this type of fish on our existing fish species inside the Dal Lake,” he said.

The official said that during the normal de-weeding routine in Dal Lake, they found a rare kind of fish on the conveyor. “It was the first of its kind here,” he said.

Videos of the rare fish found during the cleaning of the Dal Lake went viral on social media, where the fish was displayed and exhibited. The netizens expressed surprise with many saying that the fish type is an invasive specie and a threat to aquatic life.

Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean at the Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K said the fish that was seen in the Dal Lake is an alligator gar fish, which has been sighted for the first time in Kashmir. “This fish is not harmful, but we don't have any research on it as this is the first time it has been seen here in the Dal Lake,” Dr Farooz said.

He said in 2016, grass carp fish were seen here in Dal Lake. “Later, our team also found another in the Mansbal Lake, but this alligator gar has been heard for the first time in Kashmir,” he said, adding, “We will look into how and where it came here in Kashmir and how long it has been here.”

Dr. Farooz said that proper research will be done on how it reached here or whether it is dangerous for the local fish varieties in Kashmir.

SRINAGAR — In a first, authorities on Sunday launched “Shikara Post” service in the world-famous Dal Lake in Srinagar on the occasion of World Post Day.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the function, Chief Postmaster General of Jammu and Kashmir, Neeraj Kumar, as per the news agency KNO said that this service has been launched for the first time in the Dal Lake.

He said that as this day is being celebrated as World Post Day, so it was decided to launch “Shikara Post” service in the Dal Lake.

He also said that the coming week will be celebrated as Postal Week and many such initiatives will be launched at other places as well.

Kumar said that “Shikara Post” will provide services to the people living in and around Dal Lake.

Dal Lake

Dal Lake lies in the heart of Srinagar - the capital city of Kashmir and is one of the most popular and beautiful lakes in Kashmir. Much of the historical old town surrounds Dal Lake, including the Mughal heritage gardens that overlook the beautiful Dal Lake and offer a picture viewpoint, especially at sunset. Huge wooden architectural masterpieces line Dal Lake known as houseboats, where tourists can stay and experience what it’s like to live on the water.

Other than houseboat stays, Dal Lake offers many exciting activities to indulge in, such as taking a Shikara ride. Beautifully decorated and hand-painted, Shikaras are roofed canoe-styled boats that boatmen manually row across the Boulevard and inside a floating market in the middle of Dal Lake. Other than that, floating islands inside the Dal Lake, such as the famous Char Chinar Garden, support the Chinar trees indigenous to Kashmir - a tree much similar to the maple tree found in Canada.

In autumn, these trees that line the Boulevard road all around Dal Lake turn into a bright orange, transforming the area into something straight out of a picture book. If you prefer to relax by the lake, you can enjoy fishing or ‘Makai Wet’ - a roasted corn cob as you sit and watch the sunset over the magnificent and historic lake. It’s a great place to take pictures from your iPhone, especially during the quiet evenings.

Gangabal Lake

The Gangabal Lake is one of the most stunning high-altitude alpine oligotrophic lakes in Kashmir, located at the foothills of the Harmukh Mountain range. To reach Gangabal Lake, adventurers and travellers must trek all the way up for two days through the valley of Sonamarg, located around 80km north of the capital city of Srinagar.

This lake is also home to many species of fish, including the rare brown trout. Fishing, swimming and photography are some of the activities you can do after trekking up to this high-altitude lake. In the winter, the lake completely freezes over; hence, the best time to visit is July-August.

Wular Lake

One of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, the Wular Lake is one of the most pristine and clear lakes in Jammu and Kashmir valley. It attracts tourists from many countries who visit the lake for its scenic view as well as boating activities, water skiing and other sports. Fishing is an important activity that sustains the residents living in and around Wular Lake, with a wide variety of species found in the lake waters.

Other than that, wildlife lovers can also spot a rich population of rare birds such as the black-eared kite, Eurasian sparrowhawk, Himalayan golden eagles and other exotic wildlife around Wular Lake. In recent years, due to conservation efforts, there have been many sightings of the Whooper Swan - the rare national bird of Finland in Wular Lake. This species hasn’t been sighted in the Himalayan region for almost a century.

Manasbal Lake

Located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, Manasbal is one of the most charming and offbeat lakes to visit. A naturally protected haven for aquatic birds, this lake is one of the cleanest lakes out of all the lakes in Kashmir. The entire lake will be dotted with water lilies and bright pink lotus flowers if you visit during the spring-summer season, making it an instagrammable spot for social media fanatics.

The lake also has two beautiful gardens for those wanting to set up camp to capture the starry skies at night or for ornithologists looking to spot rare migratory birds along the lake. Visitors can take a Shikara ride across the lake from one garden to another and enjoy a cup of Kashmiri tea sold by the small vendors along the lakeside. This place has a true other-worldly atmosphere that’s not to be missed in this beautiful part of the city.

SRINAGAR — An 8-year-old girl was charred alive in an overnight fire at a houseboat in Dal Lake here, officials said on Friday.

An official of the fire and emergency department told GNS that the houseboat at Nehru Park Dalgate Srinagar, near Ghat No. 16, was gutted in a massive blaze.

He said that soon after receiving the information about the blaze, fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it was brought under control.

Later, the body of the 8-year-old girl, Nahida Bashir daughter of Bashir Ahmad, was recovered.

A police official told GNS that the cause of the fire is being investigated.

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday said to have arrested two sons from central Kashmir's Soura area on charges of murdering their father and dumping his body in Dal Lake.

"On 07/04/2022 on a reliable information that an unidentified body was lying in the Dal Lake near Akhoon Mohalla Foreshore road, Police Station Nigeen swung into action and fished out the body from the said spot and shifted it to the hospital for medico-legal formalities followed by inquest proceedings under section 174 CRPC," said a police spokesperson in a statement issued to GNS.

"The body was identified as of Khurshid Ahmad Tota, 62, son of Ghulam Nabi Tota, resident of Elahibagh Soura," the statement reads.

"After medical formalities, the body was handed over to its legal heirs. The preliminary medical report revealed marks on the neck etc. Also, through an investigation into other suspicious circumstances, it came to the fore that the deceased has been murdered by unknown persons who then threw the body into the Dal Lake and accordingly, case FIR number 34/2022 u/s 302, 120 (B) IPC, 201 IPC was registered in Police Station Nigeen and investigation was taken up," the statement reads.

"Through circumstantial evidence, oral witnesses, CCTVs and technical analysis, it came to the fore that the deceased was killed by his family members at their home on the evening of April 5 after some altercation, and the body was kept at home for a day," the statement maintains, adding that on the evening of April 6, after proper planning, they shifted the body in an i20 vehicle and threw it into the Dal Lake to conceal the crime.

"The two sons of the deceased have been arrested and the vehicle seized with the further investigation going on. More arrests will follow," concludes the statement.
