GANDERBAL — The Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal organized two major events this week to promote fitness, sportsmanship, and community engagement among students: the Annual College Road Race 2024 and a campus cleanliness drive.

Annual Road Race 2024

On Wednesday, the college held its Annual College Road Race 2024, aimed at encouraging physical fitness and sportsmanship. The event, flagged off by the college principal, Prof. Fouzia Fatima, featured a scenic route showcasing Ganderbal's natural beauty.

A total of 91 students participated in the race, which included separate competitions for boys and girls. The boys' race began at Power Grid Station Badampora, Ganderbal, while the girls' race started at Baroosa Crossing, Ganderbal. Both races concluded at Manasbal Park.

In the boys' category, Jameel Ahmad, a sixth-semester student, secured first place, followed by Shakir Ahmad Dar of the fourth semester in second place, and Abid Mushtaq Rather of the fourth semester in third place. In the girls' category, Khushboo Mushtaq of the fourth semester took first place, with Afnan of the second semester and Naysun of the fourth semester securing second and third places, respectively.

During the felicitation ceremony at Manasbal Park, Prof. Fatima expressed gratitude to the collaborating agencies and commended the dedication of the college staff. She encouraged students to actively participate in co-curricular activities. Trophies, medals, and certificates were awarded to the top performers.

Campus Cleanliness Drive

A day earlier, on Tuesday, the college's National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) units organized a cleanliness drive on the college campus. The initiative aimed to foster community engagement and promote cleanliness and hygiene values.

The event saw active participation from volunteers, students, and faculty members. Activities included cleanliness and sanitation awareness sessions, waste collection and disposal, and the beautification of public spaces. Volunteers gathered for an informative session on the importance of cleanliness, followed by a collective effort to clean and sanitize the college premises.

Principal Prof. Fatima, while inspecting the activity, interacted with participants and emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives. She praised the volunteers' enthusiasm and highlighted the positive impact such activities have on the environment and society.

Prof. Mansoor Ahmad Lone, NCC coordinator, and Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Ahanger, NSS program officer, played key roles in organizing the drive. The event concluded with participants pledging to maintain cleanliness and spread awareness about hygiene practices.

PULWAMA — A three-day cleanliness drive under the Shramdaan Shivir program was on Monday organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Pulwama in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The drive was kick-started by Mr. Bilal Ahmad Rather, President of Municipal Council Pulwama, at Dangerpora area of Pulwama town.

Mr. Bilal in his address stressed upon the youth to develop the spirit of volunteerism and to participate in these programmes for the service of the community which can have a large far-reaching impact on the development and prosperity of the common people.

Youth Club volunteers, National Youth Corps, volunteers from Municipal Committee Pulwama and other community members also participated in the programme.

The drive started from Dangerpora Pulwama where a spring and its surrounding area were cleaned. The local community members appreciated the drive and demanded that these kinds of drives should be done in the future as well.

The aim of the program, according to the organizers, is to create and deliver community assets for the benefit of the common people.
