Srinagar, July 15: Despite the Jammu and Kashmir government announcing a summer break for colleges, hundreds of students in the conflict-torn Himalayan region Tuesday took to streets to protest the attacks on Gaza by Israel.
The government on Monday had announced a two-week summer break as senior resistance leader Syed Ali Geelani had called upon students to wear black arm bands and hold demonstrations against the Israeli 'aggression' in which over 175 people, mostly civilians, have been killed.
Witnesses said in Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital, hundreds of students assembled at Gandhi Memorial College, Bemina Degree College and Amar Singh College and were chanting pro-Palestine and anti-Israel slogans.
Students from various colleges in the city have also assembled at the Clock Tower in City Centre. Witnesses said there was a heavy security deployment in the area. Kashmir people have marched in solidarity with the Gazans since the Israel attacks began last Tuesday. The protests have remained peaceful.
Reports said many students in Srinagar were also marching towards the Clock Tower. Activists of the state's main opposition Peoples Democratic Party were also protesting at the Regal Square in the vicinity of the Clock Tower.
Residents from North Kashmir's Varmul district said that students have assembled at the local college and were protesting the attacks on Gaza.
Hundreds of students of Government Degree College in Tangmarg staged anti-Israel protests against the Gaza killings. The students had assembled near college premises and thronged onto Srinagar-Gulmarg road at Chnadilora where college is located. They were carrying placards in their hands and chanting anti Israel and anti America slogans.
Reports of protest were also received from various districts of South Kashmir.
Police had exercised maximum restraint also Monday when a larger number of students, lawyers and even government employees protested against the Israeli attacks.
Prominent leaders in the Kashmir Valley, including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, have condemned Israel's bombings in Gaza.
Since July 8, Israel has been engaged in a large-scale aerial operation on the Gaza Strip. Israel says it is targeting the Hamas and other militant groups in the coastal enclave.
The Gaza-based health ministry said the operation has killed at least 187 people, wounded 1,390 and destroyed more than 250 houses.
