New Delhi: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Tuesday called for peaceful protests after Friday prayers and a complete shutdown on February 7 against the “illegal” shifting of Kashmiri “political prisoners” from Srinagar Central Jail to jails outside the Valley.
In a statement issued from New Delhi, Geelani said although the shifting of political prisoners is a matter of serious concern, the strike was postponed to February 7 in view of Eid-Milad celebrations.
“The shifting of more than 50 political prisoners from Srinagar Central Jail to Kathua, Hira Nagar and Kotbalwal jails in Jammu is nothing but an act of political vendetta, having no legal or moral justification. The government wants to keep the political prisoners far from their families and subject them to mental and physical torture,” he said.
“The move is also against Indian constitution as, according to a ruling by Indian Supreme Court, detainees should be lodged close to their homes so that their families and relatives can easily meet them without much wastage of time. But such decisions are taken by Indian Home Ministry and IB officials with the sole purpose of pestering the people of Kashmir,” Geelani said.
“The top police brass, too, works with arrogance, short-sightedness and vendetta and continues to shrink the space for pro-freedom people in and outside the jails, Geelani said, adding that “more 800 people including innocent civilians continue to be lodged in jails, interrogation centres and police station due to which 800 families are enduring sufferings".
Geelani appealed common masses, traders and transporters to make the strike as success. Hurriyat Chairman also appealed Amnesty International and Red Cross members in Kashmir to take serious note of shifting detainees without any need or any justification and play their role in stopping the government from shifting the detainees.
